both will be paired with a 1650 and both 16 gigs ddr4. which would hypothetically be better at playing cs2 around 80-100fps? i7 has 2 less cores than the i5 but does have 2 more threads.

(pc if the parts get here in time): ryzen 3 3100||gigabyte gtx 1070|| 16 gb ddr4|| SanDisk Ultra 3D 512GB 2.5 ssd||MSI A320M-A Pro mobo||2013 corsair cx750m|| hp pavilion case||

Tough choice, chips from the Intel stagnation era...

I'd say the 6700K is better, it clocks faster/ better single core performance, and has HT

This is a tough choice. Both have comparable levels of overall CPU performance. I would lean towards the i5 8400, with the main reason being that it will give you proper support for Windows 11. In either case, the CPUs are more than enough to get you 100fps.

With that said, if you're getting a board that would let you overclock the i7 6700K, and you don't care about official Windows 11 support, then the i7 would likely perform better in CS2.

What two motherboards are you looking at?

Performance is very similar, with a small OC the 6700K will match the 8400 but with no OC the 8400 should be better, though it doesn't have hyper threading. 6700K is what I'd get

The 8400 is the better chip, the extra cores will be more useful than hyperthreading. The only way the 6700K might overtake the 8400 is if get a golden sample and overclock it to 4.8GHz.

That said, neither of these chips really make that much sense to buy if you don't already own them and a board to go with them when you can get something like an R5 5600 setup for less.

Is there a reason you're looking at 10 year old tech for this build?

6700k, easily.

The 6700k still has sufficient multicore performance but beats out the 8400 in single threaded. Intel was basically stagnant on architectural improvements from 4th gen to 10th gen, so anything in between there is so close that the higher end dies will be the best choice.

Intel Core i7-6700K vs Intel Core i5-8400 Benchmark, comparison and differences (cpu-monkey.com)

Either way though, they both suck by modern standards because of the massive improvements in IPC/cache/frequency over the last 2-3 generations. Anything before Ryzen 5000 and Intel 12th gen is dated, Ryzen 3000 being close enough in some scenarios with the higher end dies and fast DDR4 RAM.

It's like comparing 4 to 4.5 when today's standard bottom is 10 and the 7800x3D is like 20.

Are you not located in the US? If you click on the PCPartPicker link, it then links to all of those parts (except for the GPU, which I linked to in my post).
