I Can’t Believe They Threw This Away

AdamFromLTT

A local datacenter reached out to offer us a bunch of APC datacenter cooling towers that they were just going to throw away. Naturally, we said yes, and the first thing we thought to do with them was cool a $10,000 Threadripper.

Just for future reference, the "weird fitting" that was sawed off is a union fitting. Available in literally any hardware store's plumbing aisle.

What Linus heard coming from the server room before making his "apology":

If they are too loud then may I suggest something like these

Not the exact same product as above but same same, this is what we actually have. Bring your own fan OFC, just pick something quiet (fan on other side, not visible).

Why is anyone astonished that 50-ish gallons of water adequately cooled one gaming PC (which "only" draws about 1200 watts)? That's a huge thermal mass, even if you ignore the radiator itself.

What's the plan for these things? Is the Labs building going to get a chiller plant?

If it's loud you want, try Liebert chillers hooked up to a Trane plant that isn't set up properly.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Or man who puts finger in high rpm server fan, that is also very loud 😉

But those rads and fans aren't actually that loud, sure they are 3 phase fans but it's not like I run them at 100% rpm. Servers in the room are louder.

Well, this was really stupid. Is this Linus trying to show how "tough" he is by being so care-free about safety? If that saw slips, it's a trip to the emergency room.

FTLOG if you're doing whole room watercooling again: learn from the last time and use water to water heat exchangers.  Don't just plumb everything directly into the cooling loop, cause then you're fucked with gunk and microbes and shit in your waterblocks...again.

Here's my credentials:

This CPU cooling demo was very contrived.

If you’re plumbing into a 50G tub, you won’t notice any temperature change.

50G ~ 200L = 200kg

Specific heat of water is 4.18kJ/kgC

1000W = 1kJ/S

Your water tub would warm by 1/800C a minute, which is 4.5C per hour, before any heat radiation through the air/evaporation.

Really cool vid for those of us who like to see them use the tools, or as I like to call them, the cutty, slicey, and screwboy implements, respectively
