Bottleneck check

Depends on the game but certainly nothing to hold you back from going through with it. You'll game just fine, this issue is massively overblown and really affects people with much more severe discrepancies in CPU/GPU power. Think 10400 and a 4090 @ 1080p.

Planning to pick up a used 3090. Primarily for the 24gb of vram. Playing around with production and ai software.

However it's my personal machine and I still game from time to time. I'm running a 3700x at 1440p.

Will the 3700x be a serious bottleneck at 1440p? Is it worth grabbing a 5800x3d or should I hold off?

Yea get the 5800x3d. The bottleneck wouldn't be horrible, but will definitely be noticeable. You will still get decent fps though if u stick with the 3700x. Wouldn't recommend though.

Will vary wildly from game to game. My 3900X was holding back my 3060ti in some CPU intensive games at 1440p while being more than enough in GPU intensive games.

And what I mean by "holding back" is that I got only around 60-90FPS instead of 120FPS+.

This is kind of what I was thinking. Thank you.

I had to switch from a 5900X to a 5800X3D to stop the CPU bottlenecking the 6950XT in PUBG on 1440p.
