What socket does this CPU use???

I bought this CPU about 2 years ago, and bought a cheap LGA2011 motherboard. The CPU did not fit so it has just been on a shelf for 2 years.

CPU is a 12 core 2.60GHz Xeon E7-4860V2

This is socket 2011-1. Xeon e7 chips use different boards, and there is basically no practical/cheap boards to use these cpu out there used.

When I look it up it just says its normal LGA2011

Where are you getting the information from?

The specific socket is LGA 2011-1 as mentioned by @Electronics Wizardy. Do you remember the motherboard you had that you intended to use for that CPU?

It was probably using normal LGA2011 - Sandy Bridge-E, Ivy Bridge-E, etc.

That won’t work with an Xeon e7.

The aliexpress X79 boards are lga 2011-0 and x99 boards are lga 2011-3

lga 2011-1 boards, socket R2, are the ones for Xeon e7 chips

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_2011

They are not in the same realm as the e5’s you commonly see for budget Xeons like this. All those X99 boards are just C612 chipsets for 2011-3. There isn’t a common equivalent for 2011-1, since the hardware is far more rare to come across for the motherboard manufacturers.

Xeon E7s are for high end servers. They don’t have memory controllers on-board, so they won’t work in regular workstation motherboards.

You would have to run it in something like a Dell PowerEdge R920, which is a 4U tank of a server designed to hold 96 DIMMs.
