The game certainly sucks, but the end game (a low-interest, 30-yr fixed rate mortgage) is compelling enough for people to play the credit game in the first place.

True, but again here interest rates are regulated and have nothing to do with credit score, affordability assessment or anything. Doesn't matter who you are, how much or little money you have mortgages and credit card interest are the same for all
