I know they're ment for NASes and RAID arrays but how fast should a WD Red be for a desktop boot drive? How reliable are they for constant and prolonged use rather than the high reads and the occasional write on a server?

I have one and the read speeds seem remarkably slow. Accessing an image folder (roughly 100+Mb) takes more than 30 seconds for the thumbnails to even appear. Boot is nothing really bad, under 1 minute to load from a cold boot.

For general use, it seems slow, should it be this way?

In single drive performance, they would compare to something like a WD Green, you're better off buying a Blue or even a Black drive.

It would be okay but a bit too expensive...

I already have he drive, It was the only drive they had at my local Frys that wasn't a laptop drive or a WD Black for $120.

I'm mainly asking about the weird read/ write speeds on the dive.

Red is good for backup and not so good for streaming content or playing games.
