Will This Work?

4eyeguy

If I get a new computer under the same account as my current one which is restricted by family settings, will it also be restricted? I mean this in the sense of screen time limitations.

Thanks!

The answer is yes, it will.

If you are buying your own computer, with your own money, you should set up your computer with your own personal account that only you control.
It's up to you to decide if this is a bad play in your situation or not.

This can only be done if OP allows that to happen. Which is why they need to decide if it is a bad play before buying a computer. This can be done by asking for permission, determining the reasons for restrictions, shared use of power and internet, ect.
I would suggest if it is going to be a problem, then do not buy the computer, or understand the situation.

idk I've just heard too many stories of friends in HS where they go out and buy hardware and their parents basically take it or force them to share their hardware.

Sure, and I've raised kids who need to understand how a family works.  It's one thing for a teen to feel empowered and capable, another to undermine.

If screen time is limited, it's for a reason.  Buying a new machine won't change that, and probably why the limit is in place.  Someone seems to think spending hundreds of dollars is a good idea to circumvent, which makes me believe they have a small addiction.

No offense, but take those stories with a grain of salt.  Kids exaggerate and outright repeat information that isn't true, cuz they know so much more/better than their parents who are not only smarter but have already done it already 🙂

Probably the funniest thing I've heard in a while.  Thank you!

I know that I shouldn’t be spending hours and hours a day online, the problem is, my parents are so set in their ways that they don’t seem to understand that I’m the modern world, we socialize over calls and play games together. Among my friends, my parents are regarded as the strict and controlling ones. The limitations imposed on me make it so that I cannot socialize, and, for the parents who say I need to be more social, it makes no sense for them to prevent me from doing this. I realize that coming from the child, you likely think that I am uninformed and irrational, however, I have toned the story down quite a bit in order to prevent myself from exaggerating. I know you don’t believe the perspective of a kid over a parent, but all I can say is that it’s true.

I meant that as in they would have to give permission in windows for the parents to take ownership like that.
you... do use a bios password, bitlocker encryption if windows, and secureboot on devices you own right?

The only losing move in that case is the parents have to take the pc away. Which means they should not buy the pc if that is going to be the result.

I wasnt entirely ruling out the situation that its a family pc and the restrictions are in place so everyone has a time slot to use the pc. If op just gets their own pc then it is out of the window.

I also know that as I advance into my teenage years, it is neurologically implanted in my brain to start to have feelings of animosity towards my parents and while I could just break into their accounts and turn off the restrictions, I am doing what I can to make our relationship last in a good way for as long as possible, however, it is getting to the point where I may not be able to hold out for much longer.

Thanks!

If you buy your own computer, as others have said here, set it up with your own account. What parental controls are there if you build it yourself? By default your are an admin unless chosen otherwise. Or are working under Group Policy which is usually if you have a domain.

There are many layers to this though.

How you treat your family.  Siblings.  React to a "hello" even.

My 16 year old can barely GRUNT when said hello to.  She's more a tenant than part of the family.  She barely does her chores (read feeding the cats and litter).  Nor does she even respond to texts with more than 1 word.

Just an example of her thinking she's the victim all the while treating the family like strangers.

So I implore you to be more objective and open minded to how you may come off to them.  Are you withdrawn into the 'net?  Are you present for conversations?  Not sure if it surprises you, but parents like to actually TALK to our kids, not just have them and forget them.

Learn to understand not only how they come off to you, but how you come off to them.

Maybe behavior and attitude can be changed on both sides.  Never know til you try 🙂

yeah that sucks, welcome to life. Dont disobey your parents.
If you chose to anyway, then dont do it with $800+ on the line. This is not real advice but buy a cheap phone (or three) and use it for comms.

I really wish this applied to me, I spend time with them, talk to them frequently and kindly, and do what they want me to do. The problem with this is that I have found through my experimenting that regardless of whether I am cold or loving to them, I am still restricted by them in terms of what I can do and when.

I am already planning on building a computer, regardless and not relating to this topic, I just hope that I will be able to convince them to understand that things are not the same as when they grew up.

Things are not the same very true. But I will tell you as a parent myself you see the world from a limited stand point. You will understand this once you become a parent yourself.

An old but very valid saying. The more things changen the more it stays the same.

You're focusing on the wrong part of this. The fact that you say you want to improve things between you and your parents, but your complaint is them being controlling over your computer use shows that you have a lot to learn.

It's not just about the computer use, but you're making it that way.

Your parents want you to be a kid.

Go out side and play. Pick up a sport. It doesn't matter. They want you to be active.

It doesn't matter what the "new social norms" are for kids, it's not healthy to spend hours and hours a day sitting staring at a screen.

I'd be willing to bet that they're position is that they just want you to be a kid. *YOU'RE* the one making it about computers and them being "controlling."

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Let’s take their point of view for a second, what should I change to improve things between us?

Well, depends on how old you are and why they chose to have parental controls in the first place haha.

I was 8 when I started messing with computer so I have parental controls till I was maybe 13 or 14 because I was doing the exact same thing so I could play CD games.

Double post, and I didn't do it as an edit. I wanted to make sure @4eyeguy sees this. Edits tend to get missed.

Here's some food for thought. Even Linus doesn't give his kids unlimited free reign on technology.

The only time they have "unlimited" screen time is when it's something healthy. Something that makes them think, or something that makes them move in at least a semi active way. Not just sitting there staring at a screen.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I’m at the age where you lost parental controls

You cannot avoid it until you're adult.

Parents owns pretty much everything.

Even if you bought it yourself.

It is wise to find something else until you're old enough.

Good luck.

I'm jank tinkerer if it works then it works.

Regardless of compatibility 🐧🖖
