6950 xt vs 4070 super

I’m looking to do a new build and upgrade from my 970 setup. The build will mostly be used for gaming. 
 

I’m thinking of getting the 7800X3D as the CPU. 
 

Currently, there are a few XFX 6950XT going for $800 CAD while the 4070 supers are going for $850-$920. 
 

Which do you guys think will be the better option for 1440p gaming experience while also future proofing?

100% the 6950xt, it has better perfomance overall, but it also has more vram (which is very important for future proofing), sure it does consume more power, but it's still the better option. You can also find the 6950xt used for cheaper, but you'll have to see if there are good deals

Consider the 6950XT a boosted 7800XT with a higher power draw, more heat, and lacking some of the newer features.

Consider the 4070 Super as a 7800XT with better raytracing, a bit lower power draw, and lower temperatures.

 

The 6950XT is a great card, really strong, but the power draw and the poor RT performance are what keeps it down.

Its actually a 7900xt flat out basically. They perform nigh identical. All other points stand. Overall its at worst as good as the super but does often outmatch it. Also has 16gb of vrak which is a big bonus

Not really. I had the pleasure to test them both, the 7900XT is noticeably stronger than the 6950XT on 1440p.

No. The 7900XT is 12-19% faster on average than the 6950XT depending on the resolution.

What does the 6950XT lack compared to the 7800XT?

the 4070 super uses up all 12gb and stutter at 1080p in multiple modern games , even though they are outliers.

 

the 4070S and 6950 is about the same performance, the 4070S power draw is lower, but try to find a 7900xt with the fresh price drop

 

if you play on 1440p native then the 6950xt likely wins by a little.
