Can I put a x4 to m.2 adapter in a motherboard that only has 1 native m.2 slot?

Hi everybody I have a Prime B450 Plus PC, my motherboard only has one m.2 slot which is already occupied by my PCIE SSD. I want an extra PCIE SSD so i thought about ordering an adapter (PCIE x4 to m.2). Is it going to work properly? Thanks

the PCIe lanes for the x4 slot are dedicated to that slot only as far as i can see in the motherboard manual, so there shouldnt be a reason it doesnt work.

but that said - what are you buying a second SSD for? it could make sense to just get a SATA SSD.

basically the cost for 500gb drive is the same (not including the adapter) so I figured why not? PCIE should be faster. this is kinda my reasoning

The only caveat I'm aware of is using a PCIe slot may not allow you to boot from that drive, it should work for storage just fine.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

if you're using a GPU, it may not like to have a card infront of it, may affect temps negatively, depending on how large the expansion card is

otherwise, it should work just fine

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately
