Hi. Me and my friend was today comparing our laptops a bit, and we found that they have very similar specs. They have the very same Geforce 740m, but when we tested it in the Heaven benchmark, i got twice the FPS he got. We found that that his GPU was set to 405MHz while i had mine at 810MHz, both being stock. We wanted to know how to solve this issue. Do any of you have some suggestions?

My rig: i5 3570k 3.4 GHz, XFX Radeon HD 7950, 8GB 1600MHz Kingston RAM, ASUS P8B75-M, Cooler Master K350, 500GB WD, 550w XFX PSU.

Peripherals: ASUS full HD VE228DE, Razer Taipan, Logitech K200 keyboard (not the best, lol), Wireless PS3 stereo headset (very nice sound).

Nope. Mine may even be thinner.

Do you have both model numbers? Maybe his card has some issues.

The power saving settings are probably aggressive on the slower laptop. You might want to look into both your drivers and settings to ensure everything is identical. Also, if there's still a discrepancy in performance despite having the same clock speed, the slower one probably has the 64-bit variant of the GT 740M. Sucks, I know. You can't tell whether they screwed you over with a 64-bit variant until you finally own it since they're simply labelled "Geforce GT 740M".

Might be just that. We'll run another one tomorrow, or if he's got the time, today. If it is just power saving mode, I think I'll kill him.

Have you tried manually adjusting the clocks with something like precisionx? aside from that, I agree, look into Windows power settings and the power settings in Nvidia control panel.

We have now checked the power saving mode, and we can tell it's disabled. It was running in high performance, just as mine. I have no clue, what so ever, of what is going on with this. They (Asus) might have turned down the clock speed of the card, just to make it have the bearing: "Ice Cool". But it's all just guesses. I hope one of you have a solution.

There are several different versions of the GeForce GT 740M, and each one varies in performance.

The 740M are created on two different architectures.

- GK 107

- GK 208

Not only that, they also had a choice between two types of VRAM.

- GDDR3

- GDDR5

And...they were available in two different memory interfaces.

- 64 bit

- 128 bit

Lastly, the descrete video memory capacity also had two options to choose from.

- 1GB

- 2 GB

The 740M based on the GK 208 was newer and used less power, but he trade-off was lower performance. The GK 107 variant was launched earlier in the year, but was better in terms of sheer performance.

Run GPU-Z on the two laptops and compare the specifications between the two GeForce GT 740M.
