Occasionally, a large corporation with a lot of money can look at a situation and go "wait, it's be a lot cheaper to just buy all of the talent since the management are morons". This seems like one of those times.

There are so many gray area large language models are exploiting to train their models. I'm pretty sure Microsoft want all the development in firewalled by a startup to be able to jettison it if things go awry. Imagine if Copyright law was updated to share revenue made with LLM with people that provided the training data.
