4K gaming CPU and other upgrade..

Budget (including currency): £1200

Country: United Kingdom

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Games like Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout heavily modded, mainly single player games (mostly rpg or open world) and future upcoming game..

Hi guys,

I am currently using a 1440p monitor so I could get the 144hz but I have backed out a LOT from fps gaming and mostly play single player games.

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

GPU: RTX 4080

Motherboard: MPG X570 GAMING PLUS

PSU: Corsair RM750x

RAM: 16gb 3600

CHIPSET: AM4

Monitor I'm buying: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B091JJC84Y/?coliid=I7ZG77A2IM6C9&colid=GXI4IRUVER9W&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it

I'm going for 31", as this will be the max sized monitor for my room. Small room.

I need a new CPU for 4K gaming. Any recommendations?

And will I need a PSU upgrade aswell?

Yes! I know my GPU is bottlenecked by the 3600. I was saving up money!! after 2 years I finally saved enough for an upgrade!!!

Had this rig for years!!

Thanks!!

5800x3d should be good, without changing most of the stuff.

So damn. I had a 1550ti then a 2080super then the 4080!

I have a Phanteks Eclipse P300A Midi-Tower, Tempered Glass - Satin Schwarz. Bought this one because the 4080 literally didn't fit by a 1 1/2 inch gap in my old case 😅.

I was thinking Ryzen 9 5900x. I saw some reviews saying the 5800x3d was bottlenecked at 4k... correct me if I'm wrong.

But if the 5800x3d is good enough then I'll buy it!! It's ok black Friday sale!!

🙏

I'd say get the build I linked then. Or swap it out with an aio like the lt520 if you want

Have you tried this system at 4k yet?  The GPU load at 4k is roughly double what it is at 1440p, so unless you utilization was under 45% at 1440p, you might not actually be very bottlenecked with this at 4k.  maybe slightly, but it's worth seeing where you are at and then deciding what you need.

I edit the shit out of my posts.  Refresh before you respond.

the ryzen 5 3600 gets bottlenecked even with the 4090 even though the GPU is the important bit for 4K. Hence the CPU upgrade.

Mate do you think upgrade to AM5 is worth it now? I though I would wait 5 - 7 years. Since AM5 is just at the beginning at the moment.

yes

more of the reason to upgrade to am5. You can upgrade to 8000 later down the line

I suppose, though it would be good to see how close it is in the games you play.  A fully OC'd 3600 isn't all that much slower than most other AM4 chips.  And I don't think we're at the point where you need a 5800x3d to play most games at whatever framerate your 4k monitor will be capable of.

At any rate, you might as well wait until you have the 4k monitor to do the upgrade anyway, as right now the biggest bottleneck you have is your monitor (where you want the bottleneck to be anyway) since you're using a 4080 for 1440p unless you have an absurd refresh rate monitor.

Maybe, but a fast AM4 chip would be way cheaper as the 5600 is half the price and you would not need to buy a new motherboard or RAM.

By this logic OP would have missed the upgrade potential last time around (3600 -> 5600) so really, how much stake should we be putting into investing in potential in-platform upgrades? People really don;t upgrade their CPUs that often usually.

It does ok in lower power games like COD MW2. But MW3 it has been struggling but Hogwarts Legacy either using DLSS it struggles in either 1440p or 4k

My PC AMD Ryzen 3600, Vetroo V5, Nvidia 2060, Lian-Li LANCOOL II .

The 3600 is at it limit! at 4K.

I just realised, I get 60-70 fps in 1440p in FIFA 24 (EAFC 24) which is horrible! Defo bottlenecking my GPU HARD!! Or GPU saving it to an extent!

But I just bought a 5800x3d though. In a black friday sale in Amazon! £200 off! So thought that was steal!
