Games crash to desktop after arbitrary amount of time.

marcopza

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you have any idea what could be happening. I got a new PC with the following parts:

  • Ryzen 5 7600x

  • Sapphire Rx 7800 XT (Driver Driver Version 23.20.23.01-231025a-397214C-AMD-Software-Adrenalin-Edition)

  • Asus Prime B650 Plus (Bios 1811)

  • Corsair Vengeance RGB 32 GB (16*2) 6000

  • Corsair RM750X 750W 80+ Gold

  • Thermaltake UX200 SE ARGB

  • WD_Black SN770 M.2

Every game crashes to desktop (no error code, no black screen, no blue screen, the game just closes) after like 10 minutes. This is from more modern games like Halo Infinite to less demanding games like Against the Storm. I've tried:

  • Updating the BIOS

  • Enabling/disabling DOCP

  • Updating and installing older versions of Adrenalin

  • Using HDMI and DisplayPort

  • Updating to Windows 11

  • Returning to Windows 10

  • Cleanly Reinstalling Windows 10

  • Reinstalling games

And nothing has worked. I thought it could be a RAM issue and I've ran Memtest64 for around the time that it usually takes for games to crash and no error occurs. I've ran Windows memory test and no error was shown. I've got the thermals and utilization on when gaming and I see no spike before or right when it crashes. Any ideas what could be happening?

When it comes to RAM, I've tried:

  • a1b1 does not post
  • a2b2 posts but games still crash after some time (12 minutes)
  • a2 posts but games have crashed in both (12 minutes and 40 ish minutes)
  • b1b2 posts and games crashed (50 ish minutes)

Are you sure it's not a problem with those games specifically?
I remember Halo MCC having memory leaking issues.

Have you tried with benchmarking games? (CS:GO for example).

Might be, but this happens with every game I've tried: Halo Infinite, Hunt Showdown, Against the Storm and Starfield. I'll download CS:GO 2 and see if the issue persists.

CS:GO 2

Rather the first one because that's a game that works on everything "flawlessly".

Could be a VRAM problem maybe?

Can you check your GPU and CPU temperatures while you game? Especially see what temperature it is when the game crashes.

GPU gets to like 73 C if my memory doesn't fail me. I might give any of the games that crash a run and specifically look for those values. Also, can you still install cs go from steam?

Yup, crashed on 74c on the GPU and around 54c on the CPU. Took like 13 minutes

I can only think of 3 possible things (I could be missing things so if anyone else can chime in it would be cool):

- You have a memory leak, either from the RAM or the VRAM

- Software problem (drivers or AMD Adrenaline)

- Faulty GPU

To test if it's a RAM problem, can you switch to your IGPU?

Just remove the GPU from your PC and run it from the IGPU.

I don't quite have the tools to remove the screws and everything else but I did force the PC to use the iGPU instead of the external GPU via the BIOS. Surprise, CS:GO 2 did not crash in two plus hours. Is it VRAM or anything else on the GPU, dunno. But it does seem to be a GPU issue.

Or the drivers, it can also be a software issue.

At least now you know that your RAM works flawlessly.

True, today the person I bought it from will take the pc away and take a deeper look into it. But at least I've pin-pointed the issue to the GPU. Thanks for the replies!

Your intuition might be correct. The vendor ran my card on another system and it didn't crash on Resident Evil 4. It would seem to be a Drivers/BIOS/Software issue
