Are you specifically looking for a TV or is a monitor fine?

If you're using multiple sources (game consoles and PC) then I would stick with TV, because it is very frustrating that monitors don't have eARC or S/PDIF outputs. The downside is that TV's don't use panels above 120Hz, but I might be wrong.

LG G-series OLEDs are definitely in your budget, and Sony's high end OLEDs are top tier televisions.

If it's only PC sources, then yeah you should be looking at gaming monitors like @filpo mentioned.

Samsung's newer panels support 144Hz, though it might be a bit cludgy.

120Hz on higher end TVs is pretty common.

I'd personally settle for 120Hz and find a "darn solid" TV based on price.
It's probably smarter to hang onto a $1000ish TV for 5 years than to try to spend $6000 to make it last. It won't last any longer. This isn't spending 10% more to get shoes that last 2x as long, it's spending 6x as much to get things that last... about as long.

I'd go with RTING's best TVs list, and then hunt for a good one on sale. Probably Samsung S90C or LG C3. Last year's models on sale can also be solid. I think I saw a 77" C2 on sale for like $1000ish a while back.

That is an insane budget for a TV.  The most expensive Samsung OLED is 77 inches and less than $3600.  I prefer LG for computers, but Samsung currently has the best screen technology.

I just got an LG G3. 120hz, but all four inputs are hdmi 2.1 (rather than just two on most TVs, even top end ones). It is the truth.

  • 2 weeks later...

reading all of these comments, everyone has their own opinion so here is mine. i have been looking for a new 55" TV myself and so far i have found that the LG G3 series is the best overall. 120hz, OLED evo, 4k. bluetooth 5.0, etc. etc.. every single TV i have seen is either 60hz or 120 none of them were ever above 120hz. your best bet for over 120hz is a large computer monitor like these

CORSAIR XENEON 32UHD144-A 32-Inch IPS UHD (3840 x2160), 144Hz Refresh Rate, HDR600 Gaming Monitor

CORSAIR XENEON FLEX 45WQHD240 45-Inch OLED (3440 x1440), 240Hz Refresh Rate, Bendable Gaming Monitor

the downside is these are under the 55" you want. if you have a PS5, i hear that the sony TVs have technology suited for the PS5. you say TV, PS5 and movies so i am guessing at least 3 devices so i would look for a TV that has 4 HDMI ports.
