Old gen2 cpu motherboard update to 3rd gen cpu

Go to solution Solved by jaslion,

Lenovo doesn't update the bios to support next gen stuff basically ever and the h420 seems to never have gotten 3rd gen support.

I currently have the Lenovo h420 PC running as my home server, and it's running a 2nd gen i3 CPU. The socket also supports 3rd Gen Intel cpus and I recently bought one to upgrade it for longer life. When installing the CPU, the PC fails to boot in any way, and when I put the 2nd gen CPU in it boots as if nothing has happened. I'm thinking that I may need a bios update but as the computer is running truenas scale, I can find out what bios version it's running.

The motherboard is the Lenovo CIH61 v1.1.

Can anyone help me or am I fighting a losing battle and should wait until I can find a 6th-generation motherboard with 4 RAM slots instead of just 2. (A new motherboard is just a very last resort.)

Most likely, yes. If it's running a version that predates Ivy Bridge, it won't recognize the processor even if it's supported.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Had a quick look and think it only supports 2nd gen. Had the same issue with an old optilplex

Aw shucks, looks like I'll be replacing the motherboard then. Thanks

Might as well just buy another system it's like less than 80 for a 3770 one since they have become quite obsolete.

  • 3 weeks later...

I want alot more peformance, but im deciding between same board with more ram slots for the time being or go to gen 4 or 6 wioth more ram slots and a new CPU. The only issue is running out of sata ports and not enough ram.

going to 6th gen will increase the max ram I can install into my server.
