Right now i have a 2500k which has been great, but i believe it is starting to die. I have been getting this weird stuttering issue and i couldn't figure out what it was. Over the course of about a year i replaced everything but the cpu and ram, but i still have the problem. I decided to to throw up the task manager on my second screen and realized that my cpu usage is very close to 100% when i play most games. This wasn't the case in the past.

I have been trying to figure out what cpu to buy. I wanted to hold off until skylake came out, but i don't think i can hold off with this 2500k anymore. I was looking at the 8320, but im afraid that it will bottleneck my 780. I was also looking at the 4670k. but i can get the 8320 for $119 and the 4670k is $189. Would it be a mistake to go with the 8320? or is there something else i should look at?

If you just intend on gaming or streaming your games, I would go for the FX-8350 as you will get more frames for your money. If you intend to record and edit your games, go with a 4770K, you will see a much better time in rendering your footage.

Which games do you play?

If you play MMOs/Old single threaded games go with the intel. If you play current games that are multi-threaded the fx8320 will not bottleneck the 780 and can use the extra money for new ram or motherboard.

Although If you are getting a bottleneck with i5 2500k the 4670k isn't a really big step up if i'm not mistaken?

I love the 8350.

The fact that it has 8 cores will also be very beneficial now that the new generation of consoles has extremely similar processors. This means that the games will start utilizing the cores more, in which case it's more powerful than an intel 4770k.

I play just about everything. I currently play bf4, diablo 3, minecraft, css/csgo, skyrim. I also have games that i still need to play, which are all 3 bioshocks, dishonored, farcry 3 and im sure some others. I have heard that the 8320/8350 doesn't handle fps drops well. Is that true? I just don't want to buy the 8320 and be disappointed. I should have mentioned that my budget isn't too high. I can get a 8320/8350 setup today. but if i get a i5 i will have to wait a week or two. Which i don't mind doing.

Well I have the 8320 and have played most the games you mentioned besides diablo 3 and minecraft. And i get 60+fps in those games on high/ultra settings and i only have a 660.

If you do go AMD I do recommend getting the 8320 over the 8350 and just overclock if need be. It will save you some money for sure. It will surely last you till you want skylake,.

And if you want to go Intel for the better core performance I wouldn't get another I5. That's just a waist of money for an upgrade that isn;t much a performance gain then what you already have. I would save for an I7 if I were you.

I have been thinking, would it be better for me to just get a ivy bridge cpu for now?

I have a asus p8z77-v pro, so i wouldn't have to change out my motherboard.

So far my options are:

3570k - $189.99

Xeon E3 1230V2 - $199.99

I know the 3570k wouldn't be a upgrade, but it is in my budget so i just threw it in.

or for a amd build:

8320 - $119.99

ASUS M5A97 R2.0 - $94.99

CM hyper 212 evo - $36.99

total - $227.34 with tax

Buying the cpu and motherboard together gets me $30 off.

The 3770k is $269.99 so i thought the xeon might be a better buy.

I game 80% of the time and for the rest i am either listening to music, doing basic web browsing(always have tons of tabs open), watching a movie/tv show. I also rip/convert cds on occasion. I have a huge project that i need to start at some point, where i need to convert family video(vhs to digital). I also always have plex media server running all the time. Depending on what game i am playing, i listen to music or watch something on my second monitor. So a lot of stuff is always happening.

I'm not too sure if amd or intel is better for my needs, but right now i only have $242usd to spend, so my options are limited.

-Thanks

op find this: core i7-3770(k)...perform on the same level at stock as an highly overclocked FX-8320 in most situations and should not empty your pockets.

if you where to build from scratch the FX-8320 would be the best pick but now you have an intel mobo try to find a used i7-3770 at good price.

If you need to go AMD then your kit is very nice, but look for the gigabyte 970A-UD3p motherboard instead it has an 8+2 powerphase wich is nice for overclocking and it's a solid board.

Would that xeon not be worth it? i know you cant overclock it, is there anything besides that?

I'm going to be buying everything at Microcenter, and they dont have that gigabyte board.

If you goto microcenter.com and pick "IL - Chicagoland/Westmont" from the drop down menu, you can see what they have. I could order something elsewhere, but they seem to have the best cpu prices(for the most part).

And for the used 3770k, i tried looking for a reasonably priced one. but the only ones i found were $180+ and for me, thats not worth it.

It will cost less to buy a CPU and mobo for AMD than to buy a 4670k.The 4670k cost ten bucks more but you wont have to change mobo's and will make it less hassle, also its a nice CPU but it is up to you.As far as performance a 8320 and 4670k perform about the same right now but in a few years the i5 will struggle a bit more as the 8 cores of next gen are utilized.

Could you maybe mention which games you play? It's normal that you see a i5 nearly hitting 100% but that doesn't mean anything.

I posted what games i play a few posts up

I was running windows 8 and thought it was a windows 8 problem. so i installed windows 7 and the problem was still there.

He'd still have to change the motherboard. The 4670k uses the 1150 socket and the 2500k uses 1155.

hence my recommandation for an i7-3770 or hyperthreaded xeon 1155 socket...if theres such a thing i'm not even sure!

There's the e3-1230 v2. It's not much of an upgrade if at all over an oc'ed 2500k though.
