New to NAS

Hello,

so i wanna buy a nas on which i kind of want to run an fileserver and maybe 1-2 vm (atleast 1 with a windows 11 for remoting in from thin clients (most likely raspis or something compareable connected to some display) around the house) and i wonder if i should go for a synology or qnap one or is there better solutions that arent that expensive?

I am running a Win10 VM on my Synology 920+ and it's pretty shitty. You either have to get a big Synology with a decent CPU (not this atom crap I have) or you have to build one yourself on TrueNAS or something.

These requisitions seem to be fairly simple, requiring a processor with a couple of cores & some amount of RAM. I might suggest Ryzen 5600G as the processor, at least 16GB of RAM, Windows as the supervisor system, and Samba to share files.

Never mind pre-built NASes as they cost MUCH MORE with resources appropriate for virtualization.

Just trap a big dual tower cooler on it. Something like a NH-D15 and some big 140mm+ Fans. I am running that in my other NAS in a 3400G and it's silent. Granted, it's not a crazy powerful CPU but a 5600G is more modern so it should be good as well.
