Can only boot into Windows via BIOS after updating BIOS

DeLuN

CPU: i3-6100

MOBO: ASUS Z170-A

RAM: 2x 4GB stick

new BIOS version: Z170-A BIOS 3802

I am doing some tech maintenance for my dad and updated the BIOS on his computer. Windows failed to boot afterwards. When the computer boot, the fans stays at max speed until I shut the computer down/goes to BIOS. There are no error message on screen even after 1 minute. I can still access the BIOS. In the BIOS, I can select the Windows 10 partition via the boot menu and the computer will still boot into Windows.

I have tried:

  1. flashing the BIOS again
  2. flashing older BIOS
  3. reseting the BIOS by removing the MOBO battery and unplugging the power for 1 minute
  4. playing around with the boot options (AHCI vs RAID), Compatibility Support Module settings, Secure Boot settings

So far, nothing works. Any suggestion on what should I try next?

I assume that Windows is fine since I did not touch Windows. If all else fails, I will reinstall it.

You probably confused the Windows bootloader. I know you can try to fix a bootloader with a Windows USB installer (use google for detailed instructions).

As for Boot options like Legacy boot, CSR and Secure boot, just touching one of these may corrupt your Windows installation. Use with caution and only as needed.

Good luck !

My conclusion so far: something is wrong with the MOBO. I tried installing Windows onto another drive with the same issue.

I notice the CPU LED is on while the computer is stuck at booting. I am not sure why it is on. I don't have any overclocking settings aside from the default overclock that the MOBO do in the default setting.
