Hey, so I bought a server recently and it's arriving soon. I'm most likely going to home host it but I'm worried about the noise. So I'm thinking if the noise is unbearable a temporary solution until I get a noise-reducing rack is to stuff the server in the garage and call it a day.... issue is that I don't live anywhere cold. I live in Texas, unfortunately. So if I leave the server in the garage with all fans running would it be okay? In Texas, it gets an average 90°F right now. Winter is colder but that's not coming for a good while. So if I'm to leave the U1 server in the garage it would be okay, right? I'm not running extremely excessive apps. I'll be running: a Minecraft server, nextcloud, a website or two, and coding projects like Python bots and scripts I'm making and working on. The server has 2 CPUs, 2 500w PSU, 128GB RAM, and 7 G9 server Fans. Please let me know if this would be possible to just leave in the garage until I'm able to build a noise-reducing rack to leave in my room.

Most server stuff is rated to about 40c or 104f ambient temps. So you got a good amount of room before those temps are a issue. I woudln't worry. I have ran many server in the garage without issues.

Gotcha, thanks! Oh if you don't mind helping me with someone else. I don't want my Ip exposed to the public on that server. Would I be able to get a Linode set up a VPN and connect through that VPN on the server to change the ip and run things without having the risk of anything

Alright, thanks! Do you know where I can find an enclosure that will protect it from humidity? Something under 200-300$

sure you can do that, and there are guides online. I woudln't too much about your IP getting out as there isn't much you can do with just a ip normally.

Harddrives will not be happy at those temps… they certainly won’t just die instantly, but harddrives don’t like heat. 
 

What is the use case for this? Could you not have bought a single socket mobo and stuck it in a large, but standard ATX case? Makes noise much easier to deal with.

What server? There are usually ways to poke them through IPMI to get better control over the fan curves than the default behavior. (I know Dell PowerEdge hardware can aggressively ramp the fans up, especially when you install PCIe cards they don't recognize.)

It's a HP ProLiant DL360 G9 Server 2x E5-2640v3 2.60Ghz 128GB. I'm not sure if I'm able to do anything with fan throttling

It'll be enterprise SSDs and HHDs. The case is a U1 Server rack case. I needed a server for something compact with a ton of ram and processing power. It's the HP ProLiant DL360 G9 Server 2x E5-2640v3 2.60Ghz 128GB

Gotcha, I'll have a ton of open ports. That's what I'm mostly worried about. As I'll be having over 20 ports open to the Internet.

If you get a large enough case, you can fit server mobo’s in normal ATX cases. My server lives in a Corsair 750d, but a dual socket board will be harder to fit (if that mobo even uses standard mounting holes. Supermicro boards do, but I didn’t look up that specific proliant). Just something to know for the future I suppose.

Dual socket workstations are a viable alternative. A Precision T7910 or HP Z840 will have dual sockets, as many DIMM slots, and as much power supply capacity as a 1U or 2U server, but without IPMI and redundant power supplies. They're not much louder than a typical desktop, either.

That server does not use a ATX style, it will not be able to go into any case. Sadly.

Obviously you already have what you have, but did you need dual socket? What will you be hosting with this build? 
 

I ran my homelab on a 4 thread i3 6100 and 28GB of RAM for years… I had half a dozen VM’s one of which was truenas.
