R9 280X power requirements

The Crazed Child
Go to solution Solved by Kukielka,

Ughhh...redoing all the cable managements going to be a real task. I'm terrible at it.

Thanks BTW!

No problem man!

Cablerouting in a Antec 300 is a pain in the bum :D

This is a quick question here, but would my Thermaltake Evo_Blue 550w supply enough voltage to an R9 280X? It's a fairly old PSU from 2010 but it has the 6 pin and 8 pin plugs as well as a sufficient amount of wattage for the card.

Would I have trouble running this? Would I need a new PSU?

Whats its efficiency rating? As long as you don't have insane overclocks you should be fine

%75 efficiency. Not that good at all. Keep in mind that I didn't choose the PSU, I had this built in 2010 when I knew little about PCs.

Most likely no OC on the GPU. The CPU is a locked i7, so no overclocking there.

This is a misconception about power supplies. A higher efficiency rating doesn't affect the usable Wattage. A lower efficiency rating means the unit will have to draw more power from the wall and more power will be wasted usually in the form of heat. Both a low efficiency 550W unit and a high efficiency 550W unit are capable of supplying the same amount of power.

The question isn't what the efficiency of the unit is, but whether it is high enough quality to be able to supply 550W (some crap units cannot continuously supply the Wattage they are marketed with) and whether 550W is enough for an R9 280X. 550W is probably just enough (A 280X won't draw more than 300W, leaving a fair amount of headroom for the CPU and the rest), and it should be able to supply 550W, so go for it.

This.

The efficiency only affects the amout of watts pulled from the wall, not how much is delivered to the system, just get yourself a quality psu of a trusted brand and you will be fine.

So do you think I should sell my current PSU and get a better efficiency rated unit?

That would be my recommendation, 80Plus is pretty much standart these days. Get yourself a Corsair/Silverstone/whatever psu as long as you trust the brand. You can always look over to jonnyguru's reviews, they are golden :D

Thanks for that. Should it still be a 550w PSU?

You will be peaking at 400W, as long as you dont plan to crossfire you're fine. You can even overclock quite a bit :D

Just a quick question. I have a 280x but I don't have a system to put it in. (It was on sale and I will be building one soon) and I am just wondering if a SFX 450 Watt 80+ gold power supply would be enough? Also SFX because silver stone raven rvz01 (I think that is its name) thanks in advance :)

What CPU and motherboard will you be using? There's a 600w SFX PSU coming out soon.

Also, I've been looking at power supplies. The FSP Aurum S is 80+ Gold rated but I've never heard of the brand. Is it good?

I will be using a i5 4440/4460 and a m itx h81/b85/h87/h97 not sure yet

Edit - also I'm sorry I can't help with the other question because I'm not to sure myself. Sorry. And about the 600w SFX I hope it comes soon just to be safe, also I heard it was a 550w but I may be wrong :)

You'll be safe. Just be cautious when you upgrade later on, don't add any power-hungry hardware.

Ok cool. That's good because I'll probably reuse most if the stuff in a custom steam box (inside of an old Xbox chassis) and I'll put a 750/ti in there (r9 280x is to big) so I'll be more likely to downgrade.

I've always wanted to build a PC inside an Xbox enclosure. Do you have a build log on it at all?

Me too! but I haven't built it yet but I have an Xbox that I already pulled apart cause I was bored. I think it'll work but I need more money for parts tho :(
