ASUS TUF VG27AQ1A flickers when plugged in with a Pluggable Thunderbolt 4 dock

My 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro (work laptop) and my ThinkPad X1 Yoga (personal Linux laptop) are plugged into a Pluggable Thunderbolt 4 dock.

My ASUS TUF VG27AQ1A 1440p monitor flickers constantly when I bump up the refresh rate to any value over 60Hz.  I used to plug it into a MSI Optix MAG342CQR (144Hz 1440p ultra-wide) in 1440p @ 100Hz, which worked flawlessly (both work and personal).

I have a Steam Deck plugged in via the official Steam Deck dock and it can handle 100Hz PERFECTLY.  Only reason why its not more is because of the HDMI switch.

Troubleshooting:

  • I made sure to disable variable refresh rate
  • Bypassed my HDMI switch and plugged it directly to the monitor
  • Swapped HDMI cables

Any ideas as to why it does this, and what else I can do?  It makes no sense that the one with more pixels was more stable.

I think Mac don't support high refresh rate very well. Heard a lot of people mentioned that it doesn't work at all at 144hz, not sure if this will help but maybe try lowering it to 120hz and see how things go.

My M1 Pro runs 4K 144Hz (AORUS FV43U) just fine.

I use one TB4 port for my CalDigit TB3 dock, and I use the adjacent TB4 port just for the monitor (C-to-C).

I never use the HDMI port on my MacBook because it seems to never work correctly (have tried on 2 different TVs before).

I think is Asus monitor had compatibility issue with MacBook.

Previously my Asus PG42UQ also keep flickering when connect to MacBook Pro 14" 2023 running at 4K 120hz with variable refresh rate on and I need to turn off the variable refresh rate to stop this issue.  But they are totally fine and no flickering issue when I connect to my LG OLED Flex which is also running at 4K 120hz with variable refresh rate on.

I'd agree with this, if it was just my Macbook.  Even my ThinkPad was flickering with anything over 60Hz on standard 1440p of my ASUS monitor.  My MSI, which is a 1440p ultrawide, was perfectly fine at 1440p at 100Hz (or more) with both laptops.

I never tried anything over 100Hz (or if it was even available) with my ThinkPad on it cuz I don't want my iGPU getting stressed for no reason as I don't game on it.

That's what I read, too.

When I get the time, I'm planning on trying out the other HDMI port (can't recall if I did), or DisplayPort
