Budget (including currency): USD ~$1200-1400

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Valorant, R6, FIFA, Starlight | Photoshop, Luminar AI | Deep Learning and Machine Learning Training

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

With some research, I've specced out the following configuration

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-12700K 3.6 GHz 12-Core Processor  ($275.99 @ Amazon)
  • CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black 55 CFM CPU Cooler  ($89.95 @ Amazon)
  • Motherboard: MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI ATX LGA1700 Motherboard  ($209.99 @ Newegg)
  • Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws S5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-5600 CL28 Memory  ($92.99 @ Amazon)
  • Storage: Crucial P5 Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive  ($49.49 @ Amazon)
  • Video Card: Gigabyte EAGLE GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB Video Card  ($399.99 @ Amazon)
  • Case: Fractal Design North ATX Mid Tower Case  ($139.99 @ B&H)
  • Power Supply: Corsair RM750e (2023) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply  ($99.99 @ Newegg)

Total: $1358.38

Some thoughts on the choices :

  • CPU Initially, I had specced out a 7600X as it seemed like a good CPU for gaming for $240. Looking through some articles and comparisons, although it performed equally well as its Intel counterparts in gaming and in single core applications (with much better temps and lower TDP), seems like both 7600X and 7700X aren't as performant when it comes to multi-core loads. Both, 13600K and 12700K seemed to be better as they have more cores. Since, the price difference between the 7600X and 12700K wasn't big, and I'm getting them both for about $240, I decided that 12700K is a better deal, even though it's an old chip. (Hopefully, that's a correct judgement call)
  • Cooler : I kinda didn't look for anything outside Noctua with LTT always raving about it with good reason. The seem to be quieter than many other similar offerings, with great performance. I was initially looking at the NH-D15, but figured that maybe that's an overkill and a single fan cooler like NH-12S would be sufficient.
  • Motherboard This I'm still not very confident about the one that I have given the tons of options available out there. I just picked a board that was among the top sellers on Newegg, and satisfied most of my needs with a low price. Few of my considerations were to be as future proof as possible and get a board with PCI 5.0 support (GPU, don't really think the SSD is as important for me) and DDR5 RAM slots. Another thing I ideally wanted was to get a small mATX board as I wanted to get a smaller micro ATX case, but I couldn't find lot of good options (any suggestions here would be highly appreciated).
  • Memory: Just picked the fastest ram with lowest latency in G.Skill. I don't really care much about the RGB. If I end up changing my mind, I might just replace the Ripjaws with the Trident Z.
  • Video Card : The GPU I have mentioned there is mainly for the pricing, and I'm actually planning to get the Founders Edition as I am getting that for $350 directly from Nvidia. Initially, I had specced out a 4060, but looking at all the reviews it seemed like the 4060 Ti is overall a better card and a better value for money. I don't want to go for any AMD card because I would want to train some DL models, and AMD doesn't have good support for that.
  • Case : Frekin beautiful case. That's it. But, if I find a good mATX motherboard, I'll switch to something like Thermaltake S100, or anything else.
  • Power Supply : This one seemed to be in the A-Tier in the PSU Tier list, and I've had good experience with Corsair PSU in the past.

I'm just looking for some feedback on the choices that I have made so far, and get opinions on what I could change here to get the best bang for my buck. Completely open to any recommendations and changes, especially if it helps me save money. Also, this is the first time I'm doing this, so please bear with me if I've made some stupid choices. 🙂

I would rock that build like this.

PC PartPicker shows this fan out of stock but it's available on Amazon. It goes inside the back of that case for a rear exhaust fan.

Any reason why you suggested the 5800X3d over 12700K or even 13600K? Looking at the comparisons the intel chips are much better deal for the price with a much better multi core performance.

I don't want to go for an AMD GPU because it doesn't work well for Deep Learning applications.

Although, this will be a good system for gaming, I feel like it's not as performant for productivity and also it's definitely not as future proof. The board doesn't support DDR5 and PCI Gen 5. With AMD switching to a new socket, all new CPU (atleast in the near future) will be incompatible with the board.

From a gaming perspective the 5800X3D is easily superior, less so for productivity. So depends on which is more important for you

Fair enough. Ofc your not going to get as good a deal with a Nvidia GPU from a gaming performance standpoint.

If your one to upgrade every year or so then ofc getting something that is on a platform with some life left in it would be a smarter idea.

However, if ur one to upgrade say every 4 years or so, i wouldn't worry about it. Chances are what ever platform you go with will be to outdated to be able to drop in an upgrade (like CPU) in 4+ years time.
