454 GB unallocated space which I can't use?

Hey, everyone!

I own a Lenovo W540 which had a 512GB Mushkin SSD. Recently I found out that there are Reallocated Sector Count = 38 and Reallocated Event Count = 86 on it so I decided to take action and replace it.

I got a 1TB Samsung 870 EVO and I created an image of my Mushkin SSD using Macrium Reflect. I restored the image on the Samsung SSD and now I got 454 GB Unallocated Space which I can't use for some reason.

image.png.559a2b8ce544375b65e2537f5e7a8ab2.png

I tried to create a new simple volume but I saw this:

image.png.cf16cffd21f437d963f59bcfc04ee340.png

I clicked Yes and saw this:

image.png.023e33e931fd56afb6842dfcdc50fec0.png

I found out that the max number of partitions on an MBR drive is 4 which I already have: System Reserver (S), Local Disk (D), Local Disk (C), and the Healthy Recovery partition.

I also watched a video of a dude converting his MBD disk to GPT and it looks like everything worked just fine for him.

I'm wondering a few things:

1. Are there any advantages/disadvantages of converting an MBR disk to a GPT one?

2. Why I can't extend my D drive? The option is greyed out.

image.png.71659d0ff592e7b5bcdcb7b2fe9f47ad.png

3. Why is D on the left of C? Isn't it supposed to be the other way around?

4. Why is the System Reserved partition visible in File Explorer? How to hide it?

image.thumb.png.c58c250fa3c0da3d23b358e82de14721.png

5. Why there are 3 Primary Partitions on the Samsung SSD? Isn't it supposed to be only 1?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer these questions!

Get a linux boot disk, open up GParted, and move the stuff to the right of the thing u wanna expand to the edge then expand that way. You can't expand something in the middle when theres another partition in the way. To my knowledge windows doesn't let you move existing partitions to the edge of the disk.

Macrium cloned the disk along with making it the same size as the Mushkin disk. Happened to me too.

Yes, including support for more than 4 partitions, >2 TB support, and it's associated with UEFI BIOS. MBR came with DOS in the 1980s.

Because there's no unallocated space next to it.

If you want to move the unallocated space to the D drive, first backup everything (or the whole partitions if you dont want to reinstall windows if an issue happens), proceed at your own risk, etc. Partition Wizard (theres likely other apps too) might let you do it directly or worst case at least lets you move the unallocated space to the next "closest" partition and keep shifting that desired amount of space until it gets to your desired partition.

I don't know but drive letters can be changed to anything from the app you are showing.

I don't know exactly how to hide it other than trying to remove the letter somehow, and I don't know how primaries get designated.

disadvantages  :The PC /laptop have to support the UEFI boot, and you do have to change one thing in the windows itself, if I remember it correctly, for it to boot, when changing from legacy to UEFi boot..
advantages: more partitions than 4, larger partitions than 2TB (not necessary in your case, as it's just a 1TB SSD).

Because there's no unallocated space next to it, to the right (only then you can extend it in Windows Disk Management, as any other case will involve touching the files)

Doesn't matter at all, you can create a mounting point from A to Z to any partition you like, in any order (there are some reserved letters, like C but still

Because they have a mounting points (letters) assigned to them, you can delete it right there by "change drive letter and paths..."

MBR can have 4 of the two main types of partition, the primary ones, and the extended ones, there can be only one extended one, that can be further divided to number of a logical ones, and the count of them is whatever the system allows, as theoretical it can be 65536, but OS will not allow it, linux will cape it to 60.

"the partition table has four slots. Each can hold a "primary" partition, or one can be used to create an "extended" partition which can contain any number of sub-partitions (often called "logical drives"). Extended partitions are basically a workaround for the small size of the MBR partition table, and there are limitations on what they can be used for. (For example, the Windows bootloader must be on a primary partition.)" ~ shf301

As for the question about the primary, its primary because it's not extended (you only have to main types primary/extended).
