What kind of SAS controller and Cable do I actually need?

Yea you need a sas controller here.

Go on ebay and search sas hba and there should be lots of cheap ones. Something like a lsi 9200-8i, 9207-8i, dell h310/h200 and simmilar all work fine here.

Then get a sff-8087 to sata cable. Shouldn't need the sideband connector for that drive bay as it doesn't have a spot for it anyways.

I have 4 SAS II drives in a Rosewill Hotswap bay.

The backplane has four SATA connections, but the drives are kind of detected by the motherboard SATA ports but only that something is connected, nothing useable. (some sort of Intel S5400 motherboard)

I assume I need to use some sort of a SAS controller, but I don't really know what will be compatible with that configuration.

Do I use a Sideband connector? Is that widely compatible?

I have plenty of PCIe, PCI, and even PCI-X slots for a nice and cheap solution.

Thanks!

That's the idea I was missing. I didn't realize that there was a simple SAS to SATA cable.
