Power efficient Home server

Hello,

I want to build an new rackmountable server for these things:

Nextcloud VM (2GB Ram 2 Cores)

Jellyfin/Plex VM (4-8GB Ram 4 cores)

Minecraft Server (10 Users) (4-8 GB Ram 4 cores)

2x Ubuntu server VM (2x 2GB Ram 2x 2 Cores)

 

Specs I need:
At least 1 Gigabit networking

At least 2x 4tb Hdd With Raid (4 tb usable)

At least 1tb SSD for my mediaserver

I pay 23 cents per kw/h, so power efficency is my biggest problem.

Could you recommend me parts for an server for the thing I listed above and consuming less than 30 watts?

Lets do some math here.

IIRC new disks use around 2-3w at load and 2w at idle. So that is 6W there.

I just googled and average for NVMEs are 3.5W.

 

16G DDR4 dimms use around 6w to 10w per dimm.

 

So without even considering PSU inefficiencies, motherboard, chipset AND CPU power consumption, you are already out of that 30w budget.

Still would be cutting too close. Less than 100W might be doable. If power bills are that troublesome, you should cut your expectations and use a NAS OR an ARM based SBC.

i pay more than that, and my "Epyc home server" (specs can be determined from the name) costs me less than 100 bucks per year in electricity.

 

to do some math, 30 watts is roughly 60 bucks per year for you, or 5 bucks per month, or roughly one unit of currency per week. we're into "the cost of a cup of coffee" terretory here.

 

compared to the relative cost increase of rackmountable stuff... no, power efficency is in fact not your biggest problem.
