Please help! augh, virus?

Go to solution Solved by jettonx,

reformatted. :(

I left my girlfriend to go on my PC, she followed a popup which said my flash was out of date and now my PC freezes on boot.

the program she down loaded was simply called Setup.exe, through Chrome downloads I followed the file to "downloadmediaconverterfree.com"

my AV didn't pick it up, windows recovery did nothing and so did restore,

please advise?

yeah, sounds like a virus. Scan your PC on viruses. If AVG can't help try another antivirus, for example Avast free

If you can't boot in safemode I don't know what to do. However, try booting into safemode with network and download Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and run it. It should take care of everything.

I don't know if this can be done at all but is there a way to scan the HDD without booting up..?

Boot into safe mode with networking> Install malware bytes > Run the program (this should get rid of the virus).

Report back to base camp with your results :)

Do you have a second computer? Does your current computer have a DVD drive?

If yes to both, download and burn a copy of Hiren's boot CD, then use that to boot. It comes with a few different AVs and you can do scans or import important files to a USB threw it.

P.S. even if your computers don't have a disc drive, you can make a bootable USB but its a bit more painful to do

Can you burn windows into another temporary hard drive and use that to boot? I don't know how well it will work though.

Try to find the file and then go to Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Then delete the file there and you should be good to go. It worked for me.

How would I go about doing that?

Sounds like your girly friend snagged a virus. Can you get an MalwareBytes DVD? Boot off of that and then scan your hard drive.

i would agree, this is a amazing program

burn it to a cd, boot from cd, then it already has the programs installed, so all you need to do is just find it and scan for the virus, it has just about every program needed

i always had trouble finding the download link in the above address so i normally use this site http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

I know, it has I think seven anti viruses or something, it's perfect! Saved my ass a few times.

there is one other way of doing it, alot of the time someone else has had the same virus and they have found the file, im sure if the virus scanners all fail, he can try searching google, for what he did and see if people found the file that needs to be deleted, then he can boot from the CD and delete it, but if the virus scanners dont pick it up, i would recommend reinstalling anyway

Use the windows disk and chose to repair, it will make a restore point, which should then let you into windows in order to scan for viruses.

I've already done this, no good.

Damn :( thought it would be worth a try, the other night I got, that FBI detection Virus,it would not let me boot in any of the safe modes, and that is how it says to get read of it, so then I got the idea to put in the windows disk and make a restore point, that did the trick,it allowed me to get to the desktop and run scans with Mal ware and hit man pro. damn other then that you just might have to reformat if it refuses to let you in windows :(
