I've been gripping about only having one m.2 slot on my motherboard then I'm all like well sata ports still exist. I've used enclosures for a long period of time and never noticed any huge dips, I'm curious if theirs anything I should watch out for such as a basic enclosure like this

SABRENT M.2 SSD [SATA] to 2.5 Inch SATA III Aluminum Enclosure Adapter (EC-M2SA) https://a.co/d/d78Afn6

Unless the firmware of the adapter really sucks or the USB version provides a bandwidth bottleneck ( which would affect reads too), then no the adapter itself shouldnt cause slower write speeds. I think I have that enclosure and it did not cause that issue for me.

Having said that, at anytime whether using an adaptor or not your drive could enter a condition like <20% or less free space where it might have slower writes because it needs garbage collection/TRIM of previously deleted files & such.

It is possible that if an adapter somehow causes your SSD to sleep before SSD's own garabge collection, then that won't happen and you have to rely on the OS to initiate TRIM. That was a rabbit hole i went down and had a hard time getting a straightforward answer about an LTT-recommended enclosure supposedly didn't support TRIM even though most current enclosures do...

There is no Logic in there, it’s only copper traces, connecting SATA to M.2 pins, it’s like a cable, won’t do anything for speed

If it's just a physical adapter without logic, in theory there's no performance loss.
The edge case might be if there's weak signal integrity and this results in some sort of an error check to request a retransmission. This is unlikely, except perhaps in a case where you're trying to push against the limits of PCIe (think lower quality adapter with a PCIe 5.0 set up).
