cant get nvme pcie 3 ssd to work on motherboaard

AyhamGaming

I recently bought a new nvme ssd. before i bought it, i went to make sure that its compatible. the ssd is pcie 4 but it says its backward compatible on pcie 3 motherboards. I put it in and installed windows on it. I installed crystaldiskinfo and it said the m.2 was using pcie 2, as shown in the image below. I went into my BIOS, set the pcie gen to 3, restarted my pc and its still stuck on pcie 2. Please if anyone can, respond asap.
my motherboard: GIGABYTE Z97-D3H-Cimage.png.2df895893229ce6a6136e495eda0516d.png
Could it be that i need my drive to be UEFI? or is that not relevant?

This is expected behavior according to your motherboard Manual. Only the physically wired x16 slot is PCIE 3.0. All others are PCIE 2.0. Also, this slot is Sata, and not NVMe.

The Intel Z97 chipset only supplies PCIe 2.0. PCIe 3.0 lanes are supplied by the CPU. Your SSD is running at PCIe 2.0 speeds because the M.2 slot is connected to the chipset, not the CPU.

Do you have any other PCIe cards installed in the system?

so is there a way to connect it to the cpu or something? wondering if theres any way i can get it to use pcie 3 since it's a big upgrade.

and what do you mean by pcie cards? like other drives?

No. The only slot wired for PCIE 3.0 is the X16 your GPU would be in.

one can use PCIe cards, like a gpu card, into a slot into the motherboard if it exists.

that card could be for NVME drives, which goes through those lanes and likely directly to where you want them.

Not all motherboards support full spec for every PCIe lane for every slot or when using every slot at the same time, so have to see what works best.

would only work if you don't use a GPU. Everything NOT RAM, the x16 SLOT and motherboard DVI/HDMI ports are through the chipset.

No. Z97 doesn't support NVME.

Many z97 did get an update for NVMe boot support, but not all, and this one did not unfortunately.

but that only limits the booting system from if directly, it will still work just fine as data ssd.  and you can always modify the uefi, or boot by other drive,
