Lenovo M70q gen 3 cpu upgrade

Hi I have a lenovo thinkcentre M70q that currently has an intel core i5 12-500T. Is it possible to upgrade to an i9 12900T? Bonus question what is the max amount of DDR4 ram I can put in this computer?

there is usually a good reason for mini systems having lower power cpu's.

if the cpu socket would match for the new cpu then yes you could upgrade the cpu phisically, but then there is the question that is could your psu even run that cpu?

if you want to do this check your power supply wattage, if it is a external lenovo one look on the back like a laptop charger.

if it isn't look for the info online on lenovo's website.

then you need to find that cpu's wattage consumption/power consumtion amount.

hope this helps a bit with the choice.

reply if you have another question.

It has a 63 wat external psu. Do you think a 135 watt would do the trick or is that still too low?

you should be fine with that cpu it would be a bit safer slightly underclocking the cpu but a 135 watt would work Screenshot2023-06-29140833.png.689f6c9bb391aafa37b20cdca8127954.png

It’s highly unlikely there will be any settings that allow you to do this on an OEM system board.

The 12900T is a factory option for that model, but the 135w psu is required and for all I know they might use a different motherboard and/or cooling solution when it is configured with the higher end CPUs
