Thermal throttling

Go to solution Solved by Whatisthis,

13700 runs hot, and some motherboards like to overvolt them. You should be at around 1.30v max. If you’re hitting a lot higher, undervolt.

hi all. I have a new build, key components: aourus elite z790 ax, i713700k, AMD 7900XTX, Noctua  NHU12A, 32gb RAM in a Fractal North case with 3 intake, three exhaust fans. Used the stock Noctua paste. For context, I live in Spain and ambient temperature is currently 29-30C.

If I run HWiNFO64 it shows some thermal throttling in P cores 2-7 when gaming (Apex Legends):

It shows similar values using e.g. Cinebench.

This was my first build so I don't know if this is normal or perhaps I applied the thermal paste wrong. Can anyone help me?

Otherwise it usually runs well - you can see that normal running temps are 40-42C.

Thanks!

Pretty normal and totally safe

Afaik newer cpus just boost till they hit tjmax or power limits

If youd like to have a go at reducing temps you can try setting a negative vcore offset in the bios or just static freq at the highest vcore your cooler can handle without throttling

Thanks! I'm just worried if it may be problematic, reduce product life in the mid-long term, etc.

This is my first high-end build so haven't really dealt with these issues before - I just see red and interpret bad! And seeing LTT videos they always look for issues when they find thermal throttling so was wondering how much of an issue it is.

I'll look at the solutions you mention.

I assuming that is this:

So its running at an average 1.319V but ran at max 1.405V. So it may be that 1.3v could reduce temps. I assume that is changed in Bios.

So now I have three suggestions, which is preferred?:

1. negative vcore offset

2. setting static frequency at highest vcore the cooler can handle

3. set voltage to max 1.3v

Is there a reason to pick one or the other? (or is it me being ignorant and they are three ways of saying a similar thing?)

Do a -0.100 offset. It should be stable. If it is not, go to -0.075.

It doesn’t really matter which approach you take, but the offset will give you the most consistent results compared to what you currently see on hwinfo.

For example, on my 9600k if I set the voltage to 1.25 but run a level 6 LLC, actual core voltage under load is around 1.29v.
