Crysis 3 - 780 TI comparisons (FPS) question!

As you can see from that extensive review, there's about a 25-30 fps drop between 1080p and 1440p for most of the listed games. Here's where I'm stuck:

Do I get a 1080p monitor for 75ish+ fps at max settings in most games (61 in crisis)

or

Do I get a 1440p monitor for 55+ fps at max settings in most games (49 in crisis)

Please give detailed responses if possible (= thanks everyone for helping me with this difficult decision.

Just wondering but you went for a 512GB SSD and 16GB of ram..... any particular reason?

By that I mean, do you intend to use the computer for something significantly more resource taxing than gaming?

Because I think it's somewhat overkill.

I mean the SSD.....maybe you have a ton of games.

But the 16GB of ram I can only see being justified by games like start citizen......and I'm still somewhat skeptical as to how much memory it will actually use when it's fully optimized.

Also you might want to consider Avexir's Mpower and Core series memory as they complement the yellow highlights of the motherboard quite well.

The corsair vengeance pro grey, blue, or beige/gold memory would also look quite good.

I'd go 1440 or 1600p.

If you're spending $700 on a graphics card then you should be using it for something more than the average 1080p setup.

So.....reason:logic.

I would also go with 1440p. The 780ti is not meant for 1080p gaming. For the most part, its for higher resolution gaming. Thats why I think you should go with 1440p.

1440P because a 780ti is a waste for 1080P and it looks SO much better.

Knowing I've capped my budget with this build completely, you don't think 49fps in crisis 3 will be disappointing? I wouldn't know, I've never experienced a game past 1080p or past 45 fps unless it was WoW or something else that runs really easily.

That's a great monitor, if there's anything better for that price I'm sure @WoodenMarker could suggest it.

If I recall this monitor is on a huge sale right now, so I doubt there is anything better.

I recall someone on Youtube saying that a higher resolution on a lower preset will pretty much always look better. And, I pretty much agree. Go with 1440p.

The 120hz is the only thing keeping me at 1080p. I value my smoothness at 120fps over quality. Now when 120hz 1440p monitors come out, ill definitely be getting that.

maxed out with MSAA at 1080p and above there is no single GPU solution which can hold crysis 3 above 60FPS. That being said it's not a game which demands high FPS. 30 to 40 FPS in crysis 3 feels relatively smooth for some reason.

Went to make a sandwich, great response man! I'm definitely going to check out that ram, very cool! Also, to respond to your question, In the next 7-8 months I'm going to be working on my bachelors and focusing on game design / animation, so I expect to be working quite a bit with maya / renderman. 16g ram is pretty solid for that or so I've read, and the SSD was a gift (=

A quick google search shows that plenty of 1440p monitors with a base of 96hz can be overclocked to 120hz...

No thanks, Ill wait for a reputable brand to release one, not some Korean brand. The PG278Q should be getting released soon, and ill get that instead.

I'm going to hop in and repeat what everyone else has already said, go the 1440p, even if you can't run at max, it'll look nicer overall. Plus, everything will look better, not just games.

Definitely go 1440p, recently I had to make the call whether to go 27" 1080p 120hz or 27" 1440p 60hz. In the end I went with a xstar korean monitor from ebay as you really cannot beat the price and  I was lucky I guess because my one had no dead pixels, noticeable backlight bleed or other faults that some show.  Also I am now running 1440p 120hz but trying to keep frames that high is a bitch with my 2 watercooled 780's.

Side note, if you can afford a 512gb SSD definitely get one! I have had a couple of different 120gb SSD's and now a 250gb and it still isnt enough with new games coming out requiring 40-50gb installs (titanfall) and others upcoming titles to follow suite. If you can handle constantly installing and uninstalling games then I guess it doesnt matter but to me that is just really annoying. I like to have a range of games installed at any one time so I can just pick up and play whatever genre I am feeling like.

Seriously dude 1440p is amazing. My 780ti handles 99% of games out there at 1440p, Ultra 60+, I get about 60-70 in BF4, with 4xmsaa, hbao and 110% resolution and thats multiplayer!

For crysis you can turn 1 or 2 settings down, like AA (since 1440p makes things really sharp anyway) or perhaps turn down some of the post processing, besides crysis 3 can run at lower FPS and feel smooth which is weird.

But except for the odd 1 or 2 games, everything else runs maxed out at way more than 60fps

I've noticed the same thing with my R9 290. I can even turn on 8 x MSAA at 1080p which is really overkill and the game still feels smooth. It's probably a credit to the game engine (consistent frame latency). Hopefully Star Citizen will be like that too (same engine)

I think its the way they handle motion blur that works in its favour when using low resolutions. the CryEngine is amazing, I am suprised more game do no use the engine to create their games. It can do SO much and would save companies so much money

A bit like titanfall using source engine. It still looks really good and doesnt even feel like a source game. But CryEngine is far superior looking with better effects and physics

You won't max out Crysis 3 with a single 780Ti @ 1440p with ~50fps.
