6700XT vs 6800XT vs 6950XT for 1440P/60Hz

maartendc

Hello all,

With the extremely underwhelming releases lately of the RTX 4070 and 4060Ti, and AMD not releasing a 7800XT soon, I am about to pull the trigger on a last-gen AMD GPU...

Now I am upgrading from a 980Ti... playing at 1440p / 60Hz. Going to pair it with a new 5800x3D.

Which of these would you get / is the best bang for the buck?

- 6700XT (Powercolor Fighter) for 360 EUR

- 6800XT for 570 EUR.

- 6950XT (reference model) for 699 EUR.

The 6800XT I include for reference, but is actually a nonstarter for me, since I would have to buy a new ITX case to fit it, making it actually more expensive than buying the 6950XT.

According to the graph from Tom's hardware, the 6950XT is about 3.5x faster than my 980Ti, while the 6700XT is about 2.25x faster.

Or the 6950XT is about 55% faster than the 6700XT... But for almost double the money.

So I guess the best bang for buck is the 6700XT.. But is the 6700XT good enough for 1440P / 60Hz for a few years? It only has 12GB of VRAM vs 16GB... Currently it averages about 75 fps at 1440P, which would be enough for me, but doesn't give me much wiggle room? Would the safer bet be the 6950XT? I have the money for either, but I want to make a good decision value-wise...

Thanks!

I might be intrusive, but gaming at 60Hz is a big downside no matter what's the GPU.

Personally I'd go with 6700XT and saving the extra money for monitor ugrade...

I edit my posts more often than not

Don't really understand... How can a 6800xt requires a new case and not a bigger 6950xt??

Because 6800xt would be the ideal choice for your needs, a bit overkill at 1440p 60hz yet the best FPS/$ ratio

Not at all. Well, I use this monitor as well for color accurate work, and the Dell Ultrasharp I got happens to be 60 Hz. Don't really have the space to get a second monitor setup...

Well the 6700XT doesn't push much frames beyond 60fps at 1440p anyway, so it wouldn't really make sense to upgrade the monitor anyway.

The 6800XT reference model isn't available anymore, and all the aftermarket (AIB models) 6800XT's are too big for my case. The 6950XT reference model from AMD is available, and actually much smaller, and fits in my case. It is smaller than the smallest 6800XT I can get currently.

The 6800XT and 6950XT are not that far apart in price/performance actually.. but it is true that the 6800XT is better in that regard.

Would 6700XT be enough for 1440p / 60 for upcoming games like Starfield?

Ok, makes sense, what's your max GPU clearance ?

About 6700XT, seems a bit weak for solid 1440p 60FPS,  I'd get the 6950XT

Max GPU clearance is about 267mm long, 54mm thick. So the reference 6950XT should just barely fit.

Ok thanks, that's the feeling I got about the 6700XT as well. The 6700XT would probably be OK for now, but I tend to keep my hardware for a long time, so it feels like it would start to struggle quite quickly.

Thanks!
