advice on first server/nas build in jonsbo N1

Parity drive should be the largest, but that doesn’t mean they all can’t be the same size… parity drive must be the largest, no other drive can be larger.

What is the intent of this machine? What will it be doing? I ran my homelab on an i3 6100 for YEARS, VM’s consisted of: truenas, 3x Ubuntu server (one hosted a Plex sever), home assistant, windows LTSC, multiple docker containers to include pihole, and a few other VM’s for random stuff. My CPU was never the limiting factor. And that was a 2 core 4 thread part from 2015. A current gen i3 is a very power chip, plenty enough for almost any homelab setup.

was gonna run plex, pihole, general backup of photos and games and then have a look at what else i could put on it, maybe in the future setup a game server

Game servers can require more power, depending on many things. But everything else you listed would never use more then 10% of the CPU.

Rig: i7 13700k - - Asus Z790-P Wifi - - RTX 4080 - - 4x16GB 6000MHz - - Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe Boot + Main Programs - - Assorted SATA SSD's for Photo Work - - Corsair RM850x - - Sound BlasterX EA-5 - - Corsair XC8 JTC Edition - - Corsair GPU Full Cover GPU Block - - XT45 X-Flow 420 + UT60 280 rads - - EK XRES RGB PWM - - Fractal Define S2 - - Acer Predator X34 -- Logitech G502 - - Logitech G710+ - - Logitech Z5500 - - LTT Deskpad

guessing a better cpu for game servers? also the asrock board i posted has a dragon branded ethernet port, would that cause any issues?

Game server will entirely depend on the game and its demands. I’d be very surprised if the i3 wasn’t more then enough, but, I can understand overbuilding it.

I’d confirm the NIC is an Intel NIC. It should say in the documentation of the board. You really want Intel gigabit NIC’s especially for all things “server” (specifically linux).

I like it. That mobo is expensive…. But if that’s the only real itx option, then it is what it is.

i5 is still fine, just simply saying an i3 is likely plenty. But that’s up to you.

What’s the price diff for the i3? The i3 should be plenty but could be worth spending more. Just up to you and your needs. But I’m sure the i3 would be fine.

Before buying anything I'm gonna set up a small test build of random parts and drives to try out unraid and see if I can get the hang of it easily enough and also change the network setup so I can get more access into settings and get a small unmanaged switch for the server and the pc, thanks for all the help and advice!

so far think ive found a much better modem/router to use, a TP-link archer vr2100v which will be replacing the annoying telstra modem/router and the grandstream box, still looking around for an unmanaged switch but no idea what to be looking for in terms of features

Unmanaged switches don't really offer much in terms of features. Get whatever has enough ports for your use in whatever connection you need. Sfp(+) or rj45.
