Is it normal for a NVME SSD to be running hot while mostly idle?

Now I'm wondering if I should go find a proper heatsink or find a better thermal pad if the ASUS cover was meant to be a heat sink.

Overthinking it. Years ago I ran a 970 Evo on the backside of an ITX motherboard with zero airflow, it was fine. If it was a high performance Gen4 drive things might be different.

Don't look at the temps and just use the PC.

Hi All,

I have a Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB NVME SSD that occasinally will run at low 60s degrees celsius even though I don't think it's doing anything.

This reading is from CrystalDiskInfo.

Post boot temperature may be around high 30s to low 40s due to my tropical climate, I think.

I am running it on a ASUS ROG STRIX X570-F, if that is part of any consideration.

Thank you.

Yes its pretty normal. Most run between 50-65c as their operating temps, if you dont have any heatsink on them especially yeah.

I don't think there's a heat sink per se, but supposedly there is some form of cover for the SSD?

I would say thats warm,

How is airflow in the case?

specs say up to 70c

I wouldn't say it is ideal, but my HDDs runs around 40 degrees celsius.

There's supposed to be some sort of intake fan at the shroud area.

The cover is just an heat trap. IIRC, some parts of m.2 like the heat as normal operating temps. While other components like it cold. (think it was controller vs actual storage chips)

For many reasons, you can't compare SSD's to HDD's. And this is one of them.

Yes, the NAND when it’s working like to be hot.
when it’s power off, NAND like to be cold.
And the controler like to be cold.

What case, fans and room temperature? What heat spreader if any and location in relation to fans?

I recently moved my 980 Pro froma Fractal R5 to a Torrent compact and dropped temp by about 10°C or so. So that all matters

AMD 9 7900 + Thermalright Peerless Assassin SE

Gigabyte B650m DS3H

2x16GB GSkill 60000 CL30

Samsung 980 Pro 2TB

Fractal Torrent Compact

Seasonic Focus Plus 550W Platinum

W11 Pro

NZXT H710i, NZXT fans?

Default fan placement, 3 x 140 front in take, 1 x 120 rear exhaust.

Ambient room temperature is around 30 - 35?

I'm planning to do a system upgrade sometime this year and change the case to a O11D XL.

Your room is 30-35°C? I think then your temps are relatively good.

Try these:

AMD 9 7900 + Thermalright Peerless Assassin SE

Gigabyte B650m DS3H

2x16GB GSkill 60000 CL30

Samsung 980 Pro 2TB

Fractal Torrent Compact

Seasonic Focus Plus 550W Platinum

W11 Pro
