If you can fix this PC, it’s yours!

Thanks to OriginPC for sponsoring today's video! Win your very own ChronosV3 Desktop PC challenge-free at https://www.originpc.com/landing/2023/linus-chronos-giveaway/

Origin PC sent us a white Chronos V3 gaming pc complete with an Intel i9-13900K process and an RTX 4080 GPU, but they told us we weren’t allowed to keep it. Of course, we don’t plan to give it back to them either, so we broke it good and invited our subscriber Calvin down to try to fix it. We told him he’d get to keep this beautiful, compact gaming rig IF he could get it in working order in under 2 hours. Will he succeed, or will we have to find someone else to take this compact ivory obelisk off our hands?

Something is very wrong with the giveaway. There are 2 different end dates, it shows global but the official rules state only available in us and canada, and for some reason robeytech and amd are judging the entries for an ltt giveaway of an intel pc.

The time it took to read the prize packages he didn't win shouldn't have counted against his two hours. I say he had about 30 seconds to spare.

Given the time window I expected there to be more "issues" to track down. My strategy would've been to take the CMOS battery out, reseat everything, put the battery back in, and attempt a boot, but that's just me playing Monday morning quarterback.

Don’t forget that screwed Anthony with the RAID 0 setup.  Based on Linus’s mention of previous tech support challenge I was kind of expecting that. (But based on ending yea that might’ve been too hard).

Yea I'm sure this didn't play out how exactly how they wanted, but I appreciate them trying to come up with ways to include random!

That would be too much for someone who isn't fairly experienced with PC Troubbleshooting.

I'd (probably) be fine with it, but even the vast majority of users on this forum would stare at it blankly with NO idea of what to do.

I'd have tried 2 things:
1) Before tearing everything apart, check for loose shit and plug it all back in.  See what happened.

2) Depending on results:  Tear everything out, get it running on the table, then throw it all back in.

that was a cringe video, it's a good thing they didn't tell the audience what was wrong at the start or I think I never would have finished watching it. Granted, this comes from a long time viewer who actually watches the videos (can't say I'd use someone who didn't even watch a repair video to prep for a computer repair video or any LTT video, basic prep is essential to not look like a complete noob pissing off everyone who would have finished the repair in minutes)

I think I would have started by trying to power on the computer, case power doesn't work, check the front panel connectors and jumper it to start. That's always step 1, does it turn on? is it plugged in? is everything plugged in? then move onto hardware and software. That first BIOS peek would have saved at least an hour of faffing about taking the motherboard out to stare at it or messing around with the fans for some reason.

Under normal troubleshooting, yes. However, in this case we know it's been sabotaged in a reversible way that a regular viewer (without a ton of experience) should be able to figure out in under two hours, and fix without replacement parts.

Sometimes the shotgun approach is faster and easier.

I think this was a lot better than the previous one where all the rewards were given away regardless. But I think this would be way more interesting to watch if the person that did the fixing actually knew what they were doing. Like I enjoy watching someone like Steve from Gamers Nexus troubleshot a pc like this more, than watching someone clueless like the guy in this video. The last 30 minutes were more entertaining than the rest of the video.

Have you seen this troubleshooting race between Anthony and Linus?

yeah I did watch that one, I was rooting for Anthony lol. I think the issue with these videos is that Linus is waaaaay more competitive. He takes it very more serious than the others.

That's my point, knowing it is sabotaged but not testing anything before tearing the system apart is a surefire way to make it worse before it gets fixed.

Even repairing your own system doesn't start with ripping the motherboard out before trying to power on the system.

I really hope Linus reads this. There's nothing wrong with having a wholesome contest show and giving everything away.

One of the most successful shows for collegehumor (now Dropout) is Game changer, a show where contestants compete for a price but almost every episode ends up with everyone getting the best price or at least something out of it. It's always really wholesome.

Please don't let the negative comments drive the direction of your gameshows.

The first half of the video was kinda odd to me since we can't really tell what he was doing in the case, and just look at Linus commentate. Not that there was an alternative, since he's not a presenter, and working on the PC means covering it...

I understand why the viewers were irate that you gave the things away anyway in the previous games. When watching these kinds of shows, the value provided is the stakes and response of the competitors. But if you gave it away in the end anyway, the entire duration of the show was just a meaningless song and dance before an eventuality. It's like those linear games where your actions and choice just don't matter with a linear plot and a decided ending. I don't think viewers who enjoy game shows are into linear storytelling.

MrBeast has the the most perfected approach to challenges, IMO. Even if it's a scripted challenge, the competition itself is unhinged, and if you lose, you lose. The occasional consolation tokens aside, the reason it isn't taken negatively is because of the sheer volume of games that does have actual winners. I don't think that's an option for LMG, however.

Yeah, if it were me, I'd try to power it on and see what works to begin with.

I think the challenger, even if he's built a PC, hasn't built too many and definitely not have to had to troubleshoot much. The step by step approach is something learned from experience, not something you'd just know what to do. Unless someone nerds out and learns how computers work maybe? But even then, that knowledge must be put to practice, and applying that requires familiarity with a range of hardware and configuration—meaning, we're back to the issue of experience.

I think the fact that the giveaway can only be entered in the US or Canada should have been stated in the video. (If it was please reply with a timestamp)

I might be experienced, but I'm human and I do make mistakes. Expand for common PC building advice, a short bio and a list of my components and other tech. I edit my messages after sending them alot, please refresh before posting your reply. Please try to be clear and specific, you'll get a better answer. Please remember to mark solutions once you have the information you need.

Common build advice: 1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

There is a difference between a wholesome show that rewards contestants who tried hard, and what Linus did around the first time, where he rewarded greedy contestants. You shouldn't reward people for bad behavior.

This time around, the guy actually seemed to try to win and I honestly wouldn't have minded if they gave him the full reward anyway. And I say this as a person who complained about the first show.

Is OriginPC ever going to announce a winner for a ChronosV3 Desktop PC?  I have never received any updates, I have checked all their Twitch streams (I receive email notifications), their Twitter is silent on the matter, and LTT never told us about a winner.  I think we've all been had.  HAD.

We didn't publically announce it, but the winner did receive the package.
