So I want to pick up a new headset for my setup and based on some reviews of the amazing MIC and comfort I came down to the following two:

Beyerdynamic mmx 300

audio technica ATH-ADG1

Now i saw Barnacules review of the Beyerdynamic's and he mentioned that to run these off the on board sound chipset or the included USB card is a major disservice and a waste and really promoted his Zonar with them.

I am kind of not really big on sound cards, but was wondering if these would be well served by an external DAC or would they work well using the internal sound card and the front headers.

I am looking at solution that will be easy to just plug in and use the headset/mic or go with the my speakers.

Also if a DAC should be used any suggestions on one?

Are you sure you want to get a headset? You can get better sound and microphone quality if you buy them separately. You could get a really nice pair of headphones and possibly a modmic. Or, if the Modmic isn't good enough, you could get a stand alone mic. I'm not saying in any way that either of these are bad, incredible quality in fact. I'm just saying you could squeeze a little bit better sound quality if you bought them separately.

If the mic is important then I dont have any input but if you want a good pair of headphones try the Custom One Pros

You can buy the optional mic, My custom one pro cable has gone bad already after 5 months.

FYI, those headsets are based on popular headphones also made by the company. So realistically, you're paying the differences in cost for merely an integrated microphone.

MMX300 - 32ohm DT770 = $225 difference

ATH-ADG1 - ATH-AD500X = $220 difference

Since ModMics are $50, it doesn't make sense to buy these headsets.

For the most part I kind of wanted everything integrated and a fire and forget sort of solution.

Having said that, looking at the ModMics, i might go that route.

Having said that, what about the DAC?  Is it worth it?  Would it be better to drive both my speakers (my old trusty Logitech Z2300) and a headset (all in one or with ModMics)?
