Struggling to find something similar,
Im wanting to have 2 x NAS
Dont have much data capacity as i run off 5G so cloud storage is a no go
for security/fire backup reasons
i want to and am happy to pay for NAS in my garage and a NAS in my shed (separated by 30 metres)
With them both having the same data
Happy to build custom, happy to buy off the shelf.
As long as i can backup family photos, documents, other content, i have multiple GB cables between the two.
Main purpose is no point having a RAID backup if the house burns down, and cloud is out of question.

20TB each is sufficient with room to expand if required.

i'm assuming you mean 20 per nas (unless you don't so go with a few less drives), i've got an example build which you can duplicate PCPP list for NAS: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wh7Yv3 since you have two there's no need for raid 1, unless you want to have double double redundant storage pcs. Also try using truenas as os

Each one should have a form of redundancy… but not RAID 1.

If using ZFS, use RAID Z2 which is the ZFS version of 2 drive redundancy. If using unraid, have 2 parity drives.

Or, look into synology. It will be a lot “easier” to just plug and play and be up and running quickly.

If you do build it yourself, I’d go truenas so you can use ZFS replication from server to server; this copies ZFS snapshots which is a very clean way to copy data from box to box. But, ZFS is not friendly for adding more storage later down the line. So OP, you need to weigh your options before you make any purchasing decision. Look into truenas, unraid, and synology and figure out what seems best for you. They all have advantages and disadvantages.

One vote for Synology. Its easier than breath to make 2 synology work together as you want it. I recommend a NAS  with between four to eight bays for SHR (raid 5 redundancy) or SHR2(raid 6 redundancy) and future expansion. Even with 8 bays my own NAS is actually almost full of HDs.

I have one DiskStation DS1821+ that I use as my main local back up server (step 1), so I can recommend a Synology NAS by my own experience.

Everyone here suggesting two identical systems… let me counter with: have a single NAS, backing up using Borg Backup to a drive box In your shed.

the nas can be either turnkey (E.g. Synology) or home brew (E.g. nextcloud on top of Linux). In your shed place a small, low-power “box with drives”. Run Borg to take nightly backups.

this will be the most cost-effective solution and as a bonus will protect against accidental deletion as well as malware given that Borg does deduplicated snapshotting backups.

you should use RAID even if you have 2 seperate systems.

I've been wanting to do this. The only issues are: you have to have power in your shed and either have ethernet running to the shed or have wifi accessible in it.

Instructions for frustration management:

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.

I never said I was smart, just smart enough to be dangerous.
