Huge fps drops, lag spikes

Dallen988

Hi hope someone can help,

Most games like Fornite, Hogwarts legacy, MW, WZ 2.0 etc all even on the lowest graphics settings have massive lag spikes

I've ruled out temps, cpu and gpu never get above 50-60c under game stress, all cores stay cool, motherboard + ram also

Im guessing its going to be down to the HDD, its old and ancient but i want to be sure before i commit and buy an SSD i just dont have money to burn

have attached screenshot of pc specs, to note im using the 2TB drive for my OS and games

thanks

its the hard drive, mostly cuz its a hard drive but also cuz its from sep 2014. But it might also be your aging cpu. How are your cpu percentages while your in game (use something like rivatuner to check)

Message me on discord (bread8669) for more help

for hogwarts legacy you might be running into a vram issue because these new games use a lot of vram even at very low settings

HW legacy isnt a major one, id just expect something as little as fornite to be atleast playable in a better DX rather than not, I coud be wrong my equipment is probably far too outdated for what it is

i wouldn't be too worried about minor stutters in fortnite, it happens with everyone

your cpu usage isn't high at all while in game? (if your gpu usage isn't more than 90 its probably a cpu bottleneck, unless your using a capped framerate)

yeah from what i can see cpu seems totally fine, ive just done abit more checking and the ram is quite slow after using a few programs, its only 667mhz lol...

probably worth upgrading that too?

i thought that too but even on the dead lowest settings im only getting about 80fps but still geting droped down to 30's

oh wow maybe you need a whole platform upgrade (not to be disrespectful) but hogwarts legacy and fortnite especially might want some higher ram speeds and better cpus. Would you like some suggestions (if you have the money to spend)

I totally get it, the PC is old to say the least, Ive had it that long i think its time for upgrades

I do want to spend a little bit but ideally as cheap as physically possible lol

would pref to avoid GPU upgrade if possible

Would love a cheap Ram and SSD upgrade suggestion if you could? (UK Based)

and also a CPU as i can always get that later down the line, i know ssd's arent too expensive these days and same with a ram kit

Very Very slow CPU, Not enough ram + HDD are your problems.

Vishera arch wasnt good when it came out in 2012 ( I know I had FX-8350 ) I dont want to be disrespectful but that hardware is ancient so the fact you can even start those new games is quite extraordinary.

R9 5900X, Arctic Liquid Freezer II 240, Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE V2, 2x16GB Kingston FuryX 3800MHZ CL18 Hynix DJR "Tuned" , Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC, Windows 11

Some apps will report the true frequency, but because its DDR (Double data rate), you need to multiply it by 2 to get what it would say on the box, so in your case its 1333MT/s, which is a quite standard ddr3 speed

the gpu is perfectly fine for now (still very respectable)

Nice to see your a fellow UK resident.

For the RAM check out the RAM in the ss below (fastest ddr2 sticks i could find). Then for a cheap ssd go for something with a dram cache like the Crucial MX500 500GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD - Up to 560MB/s - CT500MX500SSD1 : Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories for 40 pounds but you can go for the same ssd but cheaper with less capacity if you don't need too much to store the games

You will need 2 upgrade to new platform so you will need new CPU, MOBO and Ram anyway... Whats your budged ?

Thanks mate, just after checking the ram i currently have is actually 1300mhz, is it still worth upgrading?

I'm going to go for the 250gb of that SSD, i only really play a few games so plus windows install plenty left over

can just keep the 2tb HDD as a reserve for any other data too?

Whats a good next cpu would you say?

I didn't think there would be many UK residents on here

it could still be worth it but realistically no. The 250 gig is alright then. yes you can keep the 2tb hard drive if you want the extra storage (by all means)

A good next cpu would include a platform upgrade so save up a bit more money and maybe check out something like the cpu and mobo in ss below, but the cooler isn't included in the shot so get that and some 16 gigs of ddr4 RAM which would be 40 pounds as well as a cooler for the chip which would be an extra 35
