Can I just send my RMA'd CPU back in its box?

I just got started the RMA process on my 5600G and got an email with the RMA number. In the email was also a link to an article on AMD's website with packaging instructions to ship the CPU. The instructions never mentioned the retail box and even says on the bottom of the page to "avoid sending back the heat sink and fan."

I still have all the original stuff that came with my CPU's retail box (except for the original pre-applied thermal paste, duh), so would it not be better to repackage everything as it was to send it back to them? The idea of keeping the retail package and sending CPU on its own with just a plastic clam shell and some bubble wrap to protect it from FedEx is kinda making me nervous. If there's a reason I should keep the retail box and heat sink over sending them everything please let me know

You should send only the CPU in its clam-shell with some bubble wrap, because shipping is way cheaper for just the CPU compared to the original retail box, and especially the original retail box + box cooler.

If you want to put it in a box, that's fine, but you should ideally get a box that is as close to the size of the CPU clam-shell as possible to minimize size and, therefore, shipping costs.

They don't want your retail box. Don't bother sending it. Just send the CPU, in the clamshell. If you're nervous then use ESD bubble wrap and an ESD envelop, then put it inside a shipping envelope.
