A client came to me with a dead(ish) PC. Gigabyte GA-H170n-WiFi, core i5-5600, 16GB DDR4 2133 RAM (drives and GPU, but not relevant to the discussion)

After some examination and tear-down, turns out someone had spilled soda into the CPU and RAM area.

So toast.

Or at least the mobo is. It would occasionally boot but BSoDs are common.

Client is on a budget (aren't they always?) so any suggestions for an ITX mobo supporting 6th/7th gen CPUs? Used is obviously acceptable, from eBay, or AliExpress.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

This'll do

Basically it's 15$ less for a garbage h110 board or this.

Just to make sure, this is a typo for the i5 6500, right?

Check around on local listings, occasionally you get lucky and you might be able to get something like a Maximus VIII Impact for cheap (it happens), though odds are you're best of just looking up "LGA 1151 ITX" and sorting price lowest first.

You sure this is the board and not also the ram?

huh ive always wondered how the boards with random issues i get even get their issues in the first place. But as long as the board boots its usually as simple as dunking the thing in water (after discharging it) and the boards working again, besides theres nothing to lose here anyways

I've cleaned the ram sticks and tested them in another board, so yeah, they seem to work.

In that case if this isnt time sensitive you simply strip the board of its heatsinks and cmos battery, clear cmos + press ppwerbutton for 2 mins, then give it a rinse under running water then either dunk or you can chuck it in a dishwasher cause apparently that also works but never tried it, both no detergent

Itll take a day or 2 to dry but after that boards squeaky clean and should be working as normal

Odd you should mention this, as I watched a video on the effectiveness of said procedure.

Since it's dead, I don't suppose I could do more damage...

ive problably saved close to 20 boards at this point so its very effective for hardware thats malfunctioning due to being dirty

But a technical malfunction like shorting (unless caused by filth), dead components, etc. Not fixable with a simple cleaning procedure as ive found out the hard way with boards that 00 with no clk signal (maybe dead clockgen), dont wanna turn on at all for no reason even when there doesnt appear to be a short, etc.
