Steam Deck Bag vs Messenger Bag

Harlem_Shaker

First off, new here... I searched and searched for where I could find a thread specifically about the topic from last nights show regarding preference for a Steam Deck size bag versus a messenger bag that might hold a laptop but I could not find one.  So I do apologize if this is somehow duplicate and I failed to look in the right spot.

I just wanted to offer my 2 cents.  As someone who occasionally has to travel locally with a laptop and not much else, the backpack is a bit too much for me and I'm dying to acquire a messenger bag.  I really want the backpack but I can't justify the money for the amount of use.  For me personally, I think a somewhat slim messenger bag that could hold up to a 15" computer and maybe a water bottle sleeve on one end is ideal.  Obviously LTT isn't going to make that just for me, but hey, feedback is feedback.

Which would be your preference?

I agree, I think a messenger bag with the water bottle holder would be great for the use case I have in mind. I have the backpack for my work laptop and assorted cables and stuff but the messenger bag would be great for my personal laptop and not work related travels.  Also if there was a way to attach the LTT Tech Sack.

I can see the case for that it would be able to fit a laptop, but at that point with a giant laptop you have the backpack, so it's not critical, and I feel like this bag would be more geared towards small handheld devices that are too big to fit in your pocket but too small to take your entire backpack with you, if it could maybe just fit a small laptop for just looking at emails could also be a use.

The use case that I'm looking at this bag isn't really seeing it as a "gamer" bag but more as a work bag if only it could fit an iPad in it, for meetings, site visit etc. having such a small bag that you can just throw over your shoulder would be cool and then on smaller trips throw your steamdeck in it and always have it with you.

Yah I agree it should fit like a small 13in laptop like an iPad or a MacBook Air. With room for a gaming device. It's not a big messenger just something to tote around daily essentials.

Modular System approach?

I think Mission Workshop did something like that, but the same approach could work for tech focused bags.

Pick different sized main parts, and be able to add on pockets and straps etc.

I loves me a good modular concept. But pouches in pouches with attachments end up with a large and heavy bag once kitted out. Peak is a great example. You put the camera container in the large bag and you automatically have 1in thick sides and 20% less space than before.

I actually love the bag in the form they showed it on WAN show.
Room for the steamdeck/ switch/ a handheld gaming pc and maybe some sunglasses/ charger/ cables, wallet, and the water bottle attached to the bottom of it. Would buy it immediately even with the tax and shipping to Germany.

Whould highly prefer a messenger style bag, it been my go to bag for well over 20 years now, and ever since the backpack came out and Linus has dropped a mention at some point of possible more bags i been holding out on replacing my current one (to small)
Specialised bags like the steamdeck/handheld one Linus showed on WAN are nice in theory but as soon as you need to bring something else you will just end up chucking it into a bigger bag anyway.
If one will be a thing i whould love to point out a few things i have noticed in the long time i been daily using these type of bags.

- Many of them the adjustment cant be properly locked into place and over a short amount of time the band will losen quickly, plenty of them i ended up sewing the band in a fixed position cause it whould drive me nuts over the course of the day the bag whould hang lower and lower.
- Make sure there a nice pad that can slide along the band ALOT of them dont have that and those really dig into your shoulder.
- Outside storage for a waterbottle is great but please make it on the side because a top mounted one is anoying when getting stuff out of it and a bottom mounted one like you showed really messes up your water bottle quick plus i realy dont want the part i put near my mouth resting on any benches or chairs i sit in.
- Although the main reason i been holding/hoping for an LTT one is how thoughtfully configured the backpack is with its compartments, i must mention several compartments is a must even with a smaller bag.
- It should be able to hold something A4 size, keys, sunglasses, wallet, phone offcourse the waterbottle and the screwdriver with room to spare.
- And a thing many many bags in this space overlook, make sure the damn adjustment and shoulder padding for the band are suitbale for left handed people cause those will wear it over the other shoulder i have had so many where the adjustment buckle whould just grind into my shoulder blade or the slideable shoulder pad whould no go past a certain point and i could not wear the bag on my back when riding my bike

I don't understand why you people are limiting this bag to a handheld console, there have been so many times I wanted to carry few small things and water bottle with bag, small things being phone charger, earphones charging box, sometimes power bank and wallet.

For example, you are going somewhere for a day, you don't need much, no change of clothes or anything that would require bigger bag, but you would need small bag to carry what is necessary and nowadays it's phone, charger and earphones for many people. Make it big enough to fit Switch and charger, it will be big enough to also fit phone or/and small power bank, earphones box, etc.

If such a bag became available, I would immediately buy it if I can afford it.

Same!  I think he even specifically mentioned the possibility of a messenger style bag.  That's what I've really been hoping for.

Personally, I'd love something that can hold a Steam Deck sized device, but I'd love for it to be just a little big bigger.

On the WAN show, it looked like Luke was struggling to get the Steam Deck in there, which probably means there wouldn't be any space left for a charging brick, or a chonky power bank, or other miscellaneous stuff like keys and sunglasses, that sort of thing.

On the WAN show this was marketed as a hand-held console bag which is great, but I think misses a larger audience. Personally, I have a backpack, a messenger bag, a duffel bag and a sling bag. I most often use the sling bag when I need to go somewhere for an extended period of time that does not require a laptop. I also use bring it in the duffel when I will be otherwise will be travelling light like going to a meeting in a different city for a few days, where the duffel is my luggage, and the sling is my carry on and EDC. I use it to bring items like headphones/IEMs, charging blocks, gamer snacks, and other every day carry items like wallet/passport, keys, pocket/tool knife, sunglasses, gloves if cold. I want the console version of the bag because I would use it like a sling, it looks bigger than the one I have AND I can definitely appreciate the water bottle holder. I will definitely get the console/sling and will definitely not have any gaming consoles in it.

The style points with a sling and the messenger bags are undeniable. Look forward to either, but I prefer the sling/steam deck bag.

NOTE: if the messenger bag is what will come to fruition, then I would like to add some feedback on a single feature. Most messenger bags have a flap that opens the bag and closes with clips and in a faster paced environment having to open the bags that have the flap is often far more cumbersome than the bags that have zipper at the top. So consider using the zipper bags over the bags that have flap.

(flap - definitely the correct terminology)

You can have the best of both world actually mine a has lose flap (can be fasted) but with a zipper underneat, the flap is a must have for such a bag not only for rain protection but also for making it harder for people to get to  your zippered pounches when it sitting on your back and there often an aditional smaller compartment in the flap itself, now that im thinking about it im pretty sure every messenger bag has that kinda flap it part of the messenger bag style

I would love a slightly larger (than the handheld console-designed) crossbody to accommodate at least the largest iPad Pro model with some accessories (Brand-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named charging brick and cables for example) with the water bottle "holster". Would be amazing for meetings across campus where I have a handful of things to bring but Backpack would be cumbersome for the five- to ten-minute trek.

I think a messenger bag would be my preference as well. Just for up to a 15' laptop, maybe a notebook/legal pad, some pens, water bottle, and maybe a steamdeck. As long as this fits and it's as small and light as possible would be perfect: the typical student backpack!

Okay, so I currently use a peak design sling for when I do not need to bring a backpack with me. So preferable a sling with the waterbottle holder, room for a 11 inch tablet, battery bank, cables, and medication.

i think the steam deck one but a bit wider to accommodate small mirrorless cameras and being able to use it for more than just the steam deck.
I'm planning on getting a ltt backpack for collage next year and adding a little bag instead of having to take my whole bag to class every day, when i don't need my laptop.

*edit and the ability to hold a controller as well would be nice

I'd have to say the messenger bag idea is a favorite of mine. imo a cool design would be smaller bag, maybe only fits a 14"-13" laptop. But it could still have a spot for say, a steam deck or a large notepad. One gripe I have about the water bottle holders in most bags is that while the bottle is easy to retrieve without looking at it, you have to either set your bag down or swing it over to stow it. I dunno about the engineering for it, but that magnet clips that was demo'd for the sling could make a cool holder. Maybe make a universal cage that can tighten to any bottle, and then you can slide out for retrieve, and it snaps back in for storage.

Still mourning the loss of my OG IFixIt Pro Tech Toolkit 🥲

Id really want 2 sizes. a small fanny pack size that happens to fit a switch (not steam deck), with the water bottle holder on the bottom. Then a "large" size that is a true messenger bag. fits up to a 14" laptop. a 16" if you turn it on its side and have it sticking out the top maybe? like if it had a flip lid, not a zipper lid. so that way its still protected...ish.

But really i just want a LTT fanny pack with the water bottle holder and could carry a switch.

Maybe best Idea would be too do a line of sling bags like peak design where you have like a small one that can hold just the essential, a water bottle and maybe a switch. Then one that could fit the everyday essential, plus either a steam deck or a 11 inch tablet, and a water bottle (This is the one I would like honestly). Then maybe a giant sling that can do daily carry like a laptop, work and daily carry essentials. Maybe all three bags could share overall features (besides the tablet, laptop sleeve) and those features would be scaled up depending on the size. That would mean that They can order the same materials for all of them, and then just decide the production allocation for each version.

While I love the idea of a Cross Body Messenger or Steam Deck Bag, could we possibly get a Cross Body LTT Camera Bag with bottle attachment? I have used many, and even my lowepro is falling apart after a short amount of use and I keep having to move to new bags once or twice a year.
