I'm soon to do a build refresh with an updated motherboard for my i7 965EE

the motherboard i will be using is a evga ftw3 x58 board.

Now my question is whether triple channel will have any difference over dual channel?

Is it harder to achieve higher ram speeds? ie 1600?

Its not harder at all. Just get a certified kit :) it will increase your memory bandwith which is useful when doing lots of transfers to and from memory

Ooooh..I haven't had experience with the x58 in long time since my i7 920 I used to run.

If you could even find triple channel kits at a decent price these days, go with those. Better knowing your kit was testing to work together than grab some dimms hoping it's compatible.

i'm inclined to get triple channel kit, just checking if its worth the extra bit over dual channel

I can get it at a tad bit more expensive, dominator gt 3x4gb for about the same dollar/gb as regular dominator plats. Not the cheapest ram, but still not the most expensive  :P

I just hope i can succeed in the oc for my i7 965.

I remember ram kits from that era having non standard frequencies that's not really used today like this 12GB Dominator GT kit running at 2000mhz cas8

does the 2000mhz at cas 8 affect anything at all as compared to today's ram?

Just slightly faster being at cas8?

This kit I have was donated by a friend from his old set up. When my ram needed RMAing, he gave me what he had laying around to hold me over. For my motherboard at least, it defaulted to 1866. On an X58 board, I'm sure it ran 2000mhz native.

(I currently use 16GB of Mushkin Redline at 1866mhz and an overclocked 2500k)
