I have a Define R5 case with two USB 2.0 and two 3.0 ports. I've just bought a new Z790 motherboard which doesn't have any USB 3.0 headers. The USB 2.0 ports will obviously work as there are two USB 2.0 headers. But can i make the USB 3.0 ports on my case work through either of the F_U32 or F_C32C ports? Is either of them compatible or do i need to get some kind of an adapter?

A brand new board has USB2 headers but not USB3???

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

USB 3.2 Gen 1 is the same as USB 3.0

Cases don't really have USB versions. If its plug fits into the motherboard, the case will have whatever USB version the motherboard provides through that header.

That's what the specs say:

2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 headers support additional 4 USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports
2 x USB 2.0 headers support additional 4 USB 2.0

That's not the board he has. The Gigabyte "ultra durable" branding is clearly visible in his first pic.

@MarcusHuddinge, what is the specific model of your motherboard?

So my Fractal Design Define R5's front panel cable leading to the USB 3.0 ports will plugin to the F_U32 header on the motherboard?

Yeah… don't know why I linked that board 😅

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/Z790-D-DDR4-rev-10/sp#sp

1 x USB Type-C® port with USB 3.2 Gen 1 support, available through the internal USB header

6 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports (4 ports on the back panel, 2 ports available through the internal USB header)

If I'm not mistaken your case should have the necessary plug for the non-USB-C header, so F_U32 (Front USB 3.2)

Bleh, I saw wrong, sorry.

These should be the headers on my current Z170 board. Does the same cable plugin to these and the header on my new Z790 motherboard?

Current board should be a GA-Z170X Gaming 3 i think. It's the "World of Tanks" themed board

Yes. F_U32 . You should read the writing in the header instead that says USB3.2

Or refer to manual :

Yea i know it says USB 3.2. That's why i'm not sure if it's the same contact/header as the ones that say 3.0 on my old motherboard. I don't wanna risk trying to ram the wrong contact into my USB-header and wreck all the pins.
But you're certain they're the same and it will fit?

It is the same. 3.2 just a newer generation of USB3 (faster speed)

That 1 USB3 header will work for 2 USB3 ports. as stated in the manual.

F_U32C is for Type-E connector for USB-C. You can convert it to USB3 header if you use adapter

Alright, thank you. Does this mean those two ports on my case will get a speed upgrade after i switch parts?

Should be. ?

I'm not entirely savvy on USB damned gen speed due to their naming changes throughout the years.
@Eigenvektor care to give insight ?

Would be nice i guess, but in practice it's not really gonna make any difference anyways. All the files i transfer off of my computer using those ports are on mechanical hard drives so i only get 200-300 megabyte per second anyways. But as long as the case's cable fits in the port and it works i'm satisfied 🙂

That's also the reason i picked this specific motherboard btw, my hard drives. All Z790 motherboards only have 4 SATA ports unless you go up quite a bit in price, but then when i had given up on getting a 6 SATA port motherboard i randomly stumbled upon this one which was among the cheapest and also had 6 SATA ports so i had to go for it

Yeah, it pretty much depends on the device you connect to it.

But yes, the header is the same 19pins header. Just be careful when plugging & unplugging it, USb3 headers is not known for it's sturdiness.

Not really, unfortunately. USB 3.0 and USB 3.2 Gen 1 has the same speed.

Speed | Name | Previous names
5 Gbps | USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 | USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.0
10 Gbps | USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 | USB 3.1 Gen 2
10 Gbps | USB 3.2 Gen 1x2 |
20 Gbps | USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 |

So the F_U32 and F_U32C headers on my new Z790 motherboard are literally just the same old USB 3.0 but with the new absolute trash naming scheme? lol
Look at the unnecessary confusion these morons are creating...
