How do I transfer files between two computers over internet?

ssh, sshfs, rsync or scp

alternatively if all else fails, ftp

i have no clue about ssh on winblows (but if you want to actually use your computer you wouldnt run winblows in the first place)

from what i remember microsoft had its own file transfer protocol as well, it was called SAMBA or SMB i think.

if you want speed then the fastest way is probably scp, because it doesn't verify files like rsync. (but you can expect data loss if youre unlucky!)

You realize most of the world runs on SMB… right? And that windows has linux subsystem for windows…….. right? You can just SCP via a terminal session right in windows if you want to. Or, just set up an SMB share.

Windows has its issues, but no reason to try and be elitist and just be wrong. I also don’t think anyone who claims to use linux a lot (or even Mac… their standard network protocol is also SMB), doesn’t “remember” what SMB is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i have never used SMB in my entire life despite using gnu+linux for years

i have never used any apple hardware or software (except for cups), and havent used windows in ages either so sorry for that.

im not an 'elitist' or anything for pointing out that you need to run a functional OS on top of a non functional OS to be able to do basic unixy things, blame MS for not cloning unix and not me.

but yeah, installing WSL should be easy from what i heard

but most of the world runs on smb?

i highly doubt that, considering 96.3% of the top 1 million servers worldwide run GNU+Linux, and that i have never seen SMB on any server i have worked on.

we have always used scp or rsync for transferring files, or hell even ftp.

Have you never been an employee at a corporation..? Have you ever been a sysad at a corporation…..? Normal users don’t mount NFS shares, they are presented SMB shares. This is what makes me question your credentials. No normal folks SCP or ftp data, also, who FTP’s, encrypt your traffic, or stop sending it.

Again, this is a very narrow view to take and present to people. Most people in the world, when using network storage, will be connecting to SMB mounts.

Also, OSX and windows 7+ are all pretty solid OS’s. Again, if you have not used them/not used them in years, I’d say your point isn’t valid. You can have preferences, but there is no need to try and convince people what they are doing or using is subpar or crappy. Windows runs fine, and WSL works shockingly well. Mac is built on Unix and works phenomenally well.
