Need help & suggestion on building "Portable" ARM-based NAS.

After almost a week of brainstorming and thinking of all solution possible, both me and my friend got stuck (as you guys pointed it out). and suddenly I remember this lovely suggestion:

I remembered I have an old Dell Precision M6700 equipped with quad core i7-3612QM and 4x 8GB (32GB) DDR3 1600MT/s RAM, the only problem is the busted screen and battery. I take the laptop out for inspection and quick referencing to Dell spec sheet + motherboard schematic, and boy this laptop provide a lot. Natively this laptop have 6 SATA port, 2 of them is SATA3, rest is SATA2 (2x 2.5 inch + 1x 9.5inch DVD + 1 mSATA + 1x eSATA + 1x wired to dock connector). I immediately cleaned and re-paste it, and soldering 4 jumper wire from SATA docking connector and it's work perfectly. I also disable the dGPU by removing the MXM module.
Now for the storage, I told him if he want "blazing" fast + more rugged, he must sacrifice some aspect, one of them being storage durability, AKA it's will be all flash storage with some "minor issues". I immediately open AliExpress and buy 6x Kingspec 2TB 2.5 inch SATA SSD for total of $520 (with import tax. Rounded $86 per drive = $0.043/GB LOL), individually this drive cost $110, but I manage to haggle with the seller to lower the bulk price. I received it 2 days ago and test all the drive. I proceed to apply thermal pad to the NAND and controller to have better thermal transfer because they use metal (maybe aluminum composite) body, I discovered this SSD doesn't have DRAM cache, buy hey, what did you hope from cheap SSD right?, all SSD also appeared using TLC NAND instead of QLC one (Maybe this one is old batch sitting around on their warehouse, their newer model with same model number using QLC NAND).
For the 2.5GBe networking, I buy 2.5Gbe to Mini PCIe adapter equipped with Intel i225v chip, putting it on empty mPCIe slot. Cost me just $30. The boot drive is utilizing 2x Sandisk X300 24GB mSATA drive with mSATA to USB 3.0 adapter, will be configured as mirrored drive. He also requested to fix the busted laptop screen and replace the battery.
For additional hardware definetly not fit on the chasis, so I currently creating "dock" extension case stacked in the bottom of laptop, it's made with 1mm acrylic outer shell with 0.5mm aluminum alloy sheet "roll cage", and few post screw for stability. It's will house the UPS, laptop power brick, 4x 40mm fan, ethernet switch, 3 SSD, and the router. The dock will have standard 3 prongs IEC320/C14 with 5A fuse AC power input for UPS and Laptop power brick.
I will also ditch the "wheeled suitcase outer chasis" on this final draft.
Here's the final spec draft:
- System: Dell Precision M6700 | i7-3612QM; 4x 8GB (32GB) Samsung DDR3L 1600MT/s; Removed the dGPU (Clevo GTX 970m).
- Boot drive: 2x Sandisk X300 24GB mSATA drive with mSATA to USB 3.0 adapter running TrueNAS core, mirrored.
- Storage: 6x KingSpec 2TB SATA SSD, RAID-Z1; mSATA, eSATA and jumpered dock SSD taking SATA power from 5v dock power rail. Using mSATA to SATA converter for 4th SSD.
- Ethernet: 2.5GBe Intel i225v mPCIe module.
- Ethernet Switch: 8 port 2.5Gbe TP-Link TL-SH10008, 2 port removed for direct jumper wire connection to Laptop & Router 2.5GBe port. Shell removed except front panel (chopped out)
- Router: NanoPi R5C | RockChip RK3568B2 (quad core A55); 2x 2.5Gbe port; 1GB LPDDR4 RAM; 8GB eMMC running OpenWRT 21; Realtek RTL8821AU USB 3.0 WiFi + Fibocom L860-GL 4G module with USB 3.0 modem adapter for WAN; Realtek RTL8822CE M.2 E key module for AP.
- UPS: 4x 5000mAh Li-Po battery with 4s BMS, supplying 12V to switch + 5V to Router and case fan. Internal DC 12V adapter for charging.
- DIY "dock" case: Attached on bottom half of laptop for router + switch + mSATA, eSATA and jumpered dock SSDs + UPS + 180W laptop power brick + DIY UPS. 18.7 inch diagonally, 55mm thick. 4x 40mm 12v exhaust fan, wired in 5v for noise reduction.
This draft is final and all parts is already tested except the "dock" case which still in prototyping stage. I will post the final design result with some benchmark after it's finished, thank you so much for all the help and suggestion!
