You're wanting to skip generations in CPU architecture. I wouldn't recommend it and doubt without a lot of work it's possible. CPU is almost for sure soldered to the board.

Do not go down that path. Procuring parts might be as expensive as buying a new low to mid tier laptop.

1- That CPU has 2 possible forms FCBGA1023 (BGA; soldered on board) and FCPGA988 (socket 988)

2- I think that laptop is socket 988 so yeah, a i7-3520M could be an option for it, since it's the same TDP

3- You want to get a new laptop, usually laptop CPUs bought separately are expensive

4-Compatibility: that CPU should be compatible it's; CPUs that are totally compatible (going to put what I find):

-i5 3210m

-i7-3520M

-Dell's website (

http://www.dell.com/es/empresas/p/latitude-e5530/pd) (rPGA988B, I can't confirm this, but according to this it should, then it should support (if that one you've has a HM77 chipset) the next cpus: http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_%28chipsets%29/HM77_Express.html (look up to 35xx versions, ignoring Y and U versions)):

-i7-3540M

-i5-3380M, i5-3340M, i5-3230M

Higher versions of 3rd gen (36xx and higher) may work and may not... but you don't wanna try

5- That laptop seems to work only with iGPU, so if your issue are graphics, you need to buy a new laptop

But its BGA and he needs a new board that actually fits the laptop....

I really doubt he can find dell parts. The dell boards on eBay are for desktops and not proprietary boards.

Are you sure it'll be compatible? I mean that it'll obviously be pin-compatible, but that doesn't mean the mobo works with it...you know how picky Dell's boards are with GPUs.

Plus, where would anyone find a tray mobile processor that has such a little-known PGA socket?
