Posted February 1, 2023 Hi, I'm planning my new PC build around a 3080 I recently purchased and I'm planning on buying a 13600k. I'm looking for my motherboard. I don't really have any specific needs in terms of I/O etc, but I've heard Z790 is preferable over Z690 for DDR5 performance. Are there any manufacturers I should avoid? Otherwise I'll pick up the best value Z790 board I can find. I also have a question about DDR5 speeds. I've heard 6400 is preferable for LGA1700 but I'm based in New Zealand so it's about $42 USD more than 6000. Is there likely to be much performance difference between the two? Thanks in advance. Posted February 1, 2023 Based on pcpartpicker for NZ, the Z790M Aorus Elite AX is pretty good value. https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/product/pkkWGX/gigabyte-z790m-aorus-elite-ax-micro-atx-lga1700-motherboard-z790m-aorus-elite-ax Or the Gaming X AX. https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/product/mYnypg/gigabyte-z790-gaming-x-ax-atx-lga1700-motherboard-z790-gaming-x-ax As for RAM, 6400 would perform better for 13th gen, but 6000 is fine too, I personally would stick with 6000 because from what I remember, performance difference is quite small. Do you know much about the MSI PRO Z790-A WIFI (https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/product/8m6p99/msi-pro-z790-a-wifi-atx-lga1700-motherboard-pro-z790-a-wifi)? It's a little more expensive but I heard good things about the msi z690-a, wondering if that applies to Z790 too. I'll definitely go with 6000 then, thanks! Posted February 1, 2023 MSI PRO Z790-A is as good as the Z690-A, just update VRM coolers and chipset. But, Gigabyte's Gaming X AX Z690 is also very good, since Gigabyte's Z790 is cheaper than MSI's, I see no reason to go with MSI's. Unless you like MSI's look better, or it has specific feature that you need. Both choices are excellent, is what I'm saying. Not an expert, just bored at work. You don't really need a Z790 board unless your like an enthuasiast who loves overclocking or anything like that. You could go with an ROG STRIX B660 or something like that! Just make sure your not buying bad memory or bad RAM to accomodate for the cost of your MOBO. I'm learning video editing and trying to get some cash as a high school student. I like F1, my favourite team is Scuderia Ferrari and favourite driver is Charles Leclerc. Favourite track is Red Bull Ring in Austria. Playing with a 1080p 60hz monitor right now, hoping to upgrade to a 1440p 144hz one soon. Living in AU and that pisses me off since every event is late at night or early in the morning (almost every F1 race starts around 11 PM AEST time)
 I'm thinking I'll go with the Z790 AORUS ELITE AX. The 6000 memory I'm looking at is on the memory support list, does that mean it's definitely capable of hitting that speed? The board specification says it's capable of up to those speeds, I'm just thrown off by the native column on the support which says 4800. Is that without XMP enabled or something? Posted February 1, 2023 Author I actually just found the MSI Pro Z690-A still supports DDR5 up to 6400 so might just go with that

You could probably overclock the RAM too, just make sure you stay inside the numbers that you CPU and MOBO can handle My First PC CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x Cooler: Asus TUF Gaming LC240 Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix B550-f gaming RAM: 4x8 GB Corsair Vengeance RS (3200 MHz, CL16) Storage: 1tb Samsung 980 Pro Graphics Card: Asus Dual RTX 2060 OC Case: Deepcool Matrexx 50 Power Supply: Corsair RM650x Headset: Razer Blackshark V2 Keyboard: Corsair K70 Pro Mini (Speed Silver switches) Mouse: Razer Viper Mini Only changes I have made is I sold the 2060 for $235 AUD and bought a Powercolor Red Devil 6700 XT for $400 second hand (it was barely used, think I scored a deal on Ebay with that).
