X570 Aorus Xtreme to ROG X670E MB/Processor Swap - Windows Reinstall (Need opinions)

Hello everyone. 

 

I currently have an X570 Aorus Xtreme with a Ryzen 9 3900X processor, and 128GB of Ram. I plan on putting the new motherboard in tonight, (ROG X670E), Ryzen 9 7950X, and 32GB of DDR5.

 

Question: 

Most people say that windows should be reinstalled to ensure compatibility and performance. However, assuming I could get it to boot, would it be possible to just reinstall windows 11 while keeping all of the data? Basically just use the windows install option to keep your personal files and programs, etc? Anyone ever done this?

Correct, it's recommended to reinstall Windows whenever doing a platform upgrade while reusing the same storage drive. You can do the reset Windows option too. I've had an idea where you uninstall drivers from the previous platform on old platform and then install the new drivers for the new platform on new platform would technically work, however if issues arise due to driver conflicts, that I'm not sure and YMMV. 

 

I think I've done it once and didn't really have an issue.

It's the same chipset drivers, similar CPU architecture... I bet on everything will work just fine without any reinstalls, but it might detect it as a new board swap so it might ask to reactivate windows. Just do it.

All done. Everything went and I didnt have to do anything with Windows. I plan on doing to full fresh install, I just didnt want to have to do it the same night. 

 

Once I figure out how to get my case buttons to work again then im home free.

 

~ 37000 on Cinebench 🙂
