Its as hard as either, holding the F10 key (Boot Selector) on boot up (depends on your BIOS brand) and selecting the drive you want to boot off of. Or, you enter BIOS and set the order of you boot drives to list the one you want to boot off of first, first.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

this doesn't work on my computer. i have to do it in a virtual computer since it wont boot on my stationary, drivers and programs not intended for 64bit crash.

You can't just boot into windows if its primarly installed on different hardware. There's so much driver errors. You can access files using drive as just storage drive.

If the hardware is similar enough you can boot the drive on a different computer.
But in most cases this will not work as LoGiCalDrm explained.

And looking at the specs of your stationary on your profile I guess the hardware difference between your laptop and stationary is huge.
Accessing the drive as a storage media is the best option.

Booting the drive in a VM will face the same issues.

Even if you succeed in booting the drive on different hardware some wierd things can happen.

try going to bios (del key or f7 or f10) and check "allow booting from other devices" & set the secondary drive as the primary boot drive. may/maynot work (if using usb connection instead of sata: it may be usb driver issue establishing external connection?)

*loosen all cables to the hdd and reattach before trying again *

keep posting on until we can figure this out

What is the purpose of booting off your laptop HDD? What do you need to do or access?

As many people have been saying (And you keep disregarding): Often you WILL NOT BE ABLE to boot from a drive from another computer. The primary reason is Chipset Drivers. The image simply won't have the correct drivers installed, it will also detect that the base hardware has massively changed even if it DOES boot. Odds are you won't be able to boot the laptop drive from your desktop.

If you just need a file, then just hook up the drive as a secondary. I can't imagine what you'd need to boot it up for?
