To buy or not to buy - the same 3080/4070ti question, but a little different...

scottiecb19

Hi All,

Firstly apologies if I am covering some old ground with this, not only here but other vids/post on the internet. My watercooled GTX1080 gave up the ghost a little while back, so I've been making do with a 1650 to basically run my monitors. I have an Alienware laptop with a RTX2080 in it, but recently found it's limitation on some recent releases and had to scale back the graphics.

I've been holding fire on a new card to see what Nvidia releases, and in absence of a RTX4070/4060 (which I've seen may not be released until Q3/Q4), I've decided now might be the best time to pull the trigger.

My main consideration is price/performance, money is not unlimited but I want to get the right card in this bracket. I can see some 4070ti cards for £799, with second hand 3080's around £550-£600 - I should add that other than considering EVGA  on eBay, who appear to be the only manufacturer with a transferrable warranty in the UK, I'm looking at reputable shops who offer their own warranty/replacement service. So either way my choice should be protected for the next couple of years in case of hiccups, so I guess it comes down to that price/performance question. I know the RTX4070ti is a more powerful card with things such as DLSS 3 in it's favour, but does the extra £200-£250 justify this? I'm also keen to use the card with my laptop with an external enclosure (I appreciate these aren't that mainstream any more), but it will therefore extend the life of my laptop and allow me to game on my LG TV in 4k in a different room.

So I just wanted to see your thoughts on this, based on the above criteria? Thank you all for your help in advance.

Can I ask what shops? I just had a look at Cex and see used 3080 10GB from £600 there. I've not bought from them before, but it looks like they offer 2 year warranty on all purchases?

I'll throw in as a consideration the VRAM quantity. Presuming the 3080s on sale are 10GB model, not the newer 12GB model (don't see one in stock online at Cex) then the 12GB of the 4070 Ti might be factor too. Newer games may be starting to use more VRAM than before if you turn the quality settings up. While I wouldn't over focus on VRAM quantity, having a bit more might leave you in a better position for new titles over the next couple years or so, without having to reduce settings.

Far as it goes, there is no value for money when it comes to the 4000 series. Jenson wants to sell you a card at the price of a console (his words) and there is nothing you can do about it but refuse until the market lowers the prices.

So it comes down to what card do you need to buy to run the software you use and it might be just a 6600 which will be as good as a 1080, then go for the older cards at the lower price or get one with more ooph, or suck up the price gouging and go nVidia.

@191x7 Thanks for this - R9 3900X (AIO cooled), 32gb RAM, MSI MEGX570 ACE. I have two monitors, a 28" 4k monitor and a 34"UWQHD curved display, which I intend to be the primary gaming monitor.

@porinaCEX was the main shop. I'm sure I've seen another one elsewhere but I've focused mainly on CEX.

With that, you can easily go for a 4070Ti or a similar card.

Maybe a 6950XT?

I was sure my current rig would support either (though might need a PSU upgrade for a 3080 as I have a 650W gold one. It was the opinion on whether the 4070ti was worth the extra £200-£250?
